Sram 22 & 10 speed cross compatibility

Has anyone out there got any experience of running Sram 22 cranks and chainrings with an otherwise 10 speed system?

I have a 2012 Red 10 speed system and want to replace my compact with a double and figure getting an 11 speed chainset would be one less thing to replace later if I go 11 speed.

I hear that the cranks are the same but that the chain rings may be slightly different in thickness and spacing.

Does this make a material difference to shifting performance etc?
