Sustrans Route 55

Hi all, I'm currently picking out a route for my new commute, mapping websites suggest using route 55 for a large part of it (roughly Farnworth to Worsley then along the canal to Stretford). I'm wondering if anybody out there has any knowledge of this route, specifically is it well-surfaced and suitable for a road bike, and also is it lit? I love the idea of breezing into work without tackling the traffic but the last thing I want is punctures and mudbaths galore. Cheers, Rich
