Cycle Superhighway U-turn

    So here in London it looks like TfL has finally admitted the Cycle Superhighways are no good. Andrew Gilligan has said 70% of the routes are along busy roads that are not suitable for cycle traffic. Well the LCC told TfL that when the routes were first planned but it’s taken a series of fatalities for TfL to finally appreciate that the LCC was right. I suspect that comes as little consolation to the families and friends of those who have died.

    Oh and TfL will publicise s series of ‘quiet ways’. I presume these are the existing LCC cycle routes across London that TfL has so far refused to promote.

    Direct for who? Just those who live near to the superhighways?

    If you’re commute rally would treble, maybe you could just ride the main routes as before, and then cross some of the dangerous junctions on foot. Maybe that would be a compromise. It’s what I do when there’s no reasonably suitable alternative route.

    We’ve got to be realistic here. Superhighways don’t work unless they have full segregation, and we don’t have the cash for more than a few miles of those. And all they do, frankly, is encourage cyclists to use a route with dangerous junctions.

    TfL’s announcement is good news for cyclists.

    Yep, CS7 has some really scary bits. It’s the Stupidhighway I’ve used the most.

    I’ve commuted across London
    I’ve commuted across London for years and used a lot of those LCC routes that’ll probably form the foundation of the ‘quiet ways’. Actually you’d be surprised. They skip the major junctions and a lot of the traffic lights, so they’re no slower than the Cycle Stupidhighways, plus they’re safer and more enjoyable to use.

    But yes, many of those who drive don’t need to. And many of those who drive can’t be trusted with a skateboard, let alone a motor vehicle.
