Different Saddle Needed – Any Suggestions ?

    OKAY…. Let’s start of by saying I am novice to cycling, just bought a new bike (Giant Revolt 1) and I already know that the saddle provided with the bike is not right for me, as I am starting to get numb nuts syndrome already.

    I am a big guy, and am not the most supple of people, if I were to use the Fizik methodology I am a BULL rider. So, here we go, I know that saddles are a very personal choice, but am open to suggestions for a different pew for my bike. Anyone out there got any suggestions, it would be appreciated…. 😀

    Selle italia do a system approach as well, though most of their medium to narrow models suit me, I must say I never got on with Brooks though, only the swallow was anywhere near tolerable. I’m 13 stone though.

    I’m a bit of a Brooks fan,
    I’m a bit of a Brooks fan, but they’re heavy if you’re worried about weight and pricey. I have an Imperial on a hybrid/commuter and a Swift on a road bike. I’d wear cycle shorts for a long ride, but they really do work and you don’t get an aching backside which I used to get with other saddles. The also look ‘the business’. My mountain bike has a dreadful saddle which I need to replace. I can barely sit down following a day’s biking. The Specialised saddle fitting service looked good as a Brooks leather saddle probably wouldn’t fare too well on an MTB.

    I have had a Ponza Power –
    I have had a Ponza Power – destroyed my backside. A Spoon – I think my bum was so damaged from the Ponza that I didn’t give it enough of a chance, however it has a raised ‘spoon’ at the back that I just couldn’t get to grips with. Finally I have a Specialised Romin evo Expert. Ruddy marvelous. Why I didn’t get one in the fist place. A cracking saddle – comfy, looks great, light, and no raised bit at the back so you can move about easily and change positions

    A few guys I ride with swear by the Specialized saddle range too, some of them come in pretty cheaply as they do the same model usually twice in low end and high end builds.

    I’d go with the advice of trying out some tester saddles first, it’s a big investment, every good bike shop should give you that opportunity. 🙂

    I love the Charge Spoon too.
    I love the Charge Spoon too. I’ve been using one for years on my MTB and then road bike and haven’t suffered the dreaded numb willy syndrome (NWS, ask your doctor) once.

    Padded shorts. I got numb
    Padded shorts. I got numb nuts syndrome about 20 miles into my first sportive, found out at the rest stop when I found I’d lost all sensation in my man bits. Took a day to get normal.

    And make sure the seat’s at the right height. Too high and the contact area rolls over the seat with each pedal stroke. Too low and your knees will want to resign and take up competitive backgammon. Also worth getting up out of the saddle every ten minutes or so to get blood flowing through the affected area if it’s been reduced.

    Other than that, Charge Spoon get’s a warm recommendation. Did 7 hours in the saddle recently, my legs protested but man bits working fine.

    I’m a big guy too. Don’t make the mistake I did buying loads of different saddles to find something suitable. I eventually went to my local LBS which is a Fizik demo centre and tried all the shapes and sizes. I thought I would be a bull, but turned out to get on best with the chameleon.

    I landed up getting the Fizik Kurve. It’s a ridiculous amount of money, but us big guys suffer with all contact points on the bike so it’s worth getting it right.

    San Marco ‘Ponza’ works for me – are you near a big lbs? – i believe some shops will let you ‘trail’/’try out’ a saddle
