Sadly there are plenty around like Ms Curall who are wholly unwilling to grasp the concept of “shared” use, to whom your presence on a bike is a red rag to a bull no matter how carefully you ride. Tooting & Wandsworth recently had to fight off an attempt to get rid of cycle lanes after a well organised campaign by Curall types.
Anyway, time to sigh and move on

I’d say they do work, provided they’ve been properly designed, and on the assumption of common sense and courtesy from all parties… riding at sensible speed, walking and riding on one side of the path, and being/making others aware of the situation.

Unfortunately there are people lacking in these abilities, and there are others who will make sensational generalisations when something goes wrong, leading to segregation and similar idiot-proofing being the only viable option(s).
