The ‘widget’ behind the seat tube to connect mudguards to. help!

    Grrrr.

    So there I was on Sunday, setting my bike up for winter by attaching my guards when I happened upon a slight problem, the thread that sits in the ‘bridge’ between seatsays will not accept the bolt, I get my tap & die set out and then disaster strikes, the whole ‘widget’ starts to rotate, it having dislodged itself.

    In short I then had to drill the whole thing out which has left me with nothing to attach my guard to, I’m off to the LBS later to see if they have a replacement but if not are there any replacements online? It doesn’t help I’ve no idea what it is I’m actually searching for!

    That’s the chainstay bridge,
    That’s the chainstay bridge, not the seatstay bridge.

    Oh, and some mudguard sets, such as SKS chromoplastics, come with a metal bracket that can clip over the chainstay bridge if it isn’t drilled. You could use one of those. (Local bike shop may have a surplus one if you don’t.)

    It is indeed a ‘rivnut’,
    It is indeed a ‘rivnut’, knowing what it’s called certainly makes it a lot easier!

    For those unsure from my OP it’s be bridge behind the bottom bracket, not the bridge that the brake caliper is attached to.

    Simple solution will be a nut & bolt, slighty more elegant solution will be to have a new rivnut installed.

    If it is a rivnut I can see
    If it is a rivnut I can see the issue, and have had the same with bottle cage nuts.
    You are left with very little to grip to drill out the old one, once you have it out you will need a new nut and a tool to insert it.
    For the cost of the tool it is generally cheaper finding a bike shop that can do it for you.

    Do you mean a threaded insert that sits in a hole in the bridge between seatstays? Similar to the one that a bottle cage would attach to on the downtube? If so, these are called ‘rivnuts’, I believe. i.e., half-rivet, half-nut.

    I’m also struggling to picture what you are explaining.
    For bikes that dont have mounting points the general solution is to use p-clips. It’ll cost a couple of quid and holds racks and guards very securely. Mighr help fix your problem.
