Tuning Shimano RapidRise

I have a Shimano RapidRise rear mech - does the barrel adjuster work in the same way as on a conventional deraillieur? I find I am having to shift twice to move to the next biggest cog, but then click one back down again to stop the chain skipping in between two gears. When I hold the bike off the ground and change gears its fine, it only plays up when im riding 8|

If you mean does it tighten
If you mean does it tighten or loosen the tension on the cable, yes!

If you mean does tightening the cable pulls the chain out an easier gear/larger cog? No, it works the opposite way. More tension, harder gear/smaller cog.
