    My missus is pregnant – with twins!

    I’ve just bought my new bike on the basis that I’m never going to see my cash again – have you SEEN the price of a double buggy with all the gubbins?!

    Then again, once the babies arrive, I might never see the bike again either…

    Shorter term, I’m thinking that if all goes ok, I may provide a scan picture to Nick Hussey at Vulpine for the ‘humanising cyclists’-thingymebob. I figure it’s quite a powerful image to suggest that such a pic is an important reason that I get home safely.

    I do have one actually, and
    I do have one actually, and hope to combine that with riding to work. If I can extend one or two of the commuting journeys to an hour and a bit, I’ll still need to build back up to club run distances eventually, but hopefully retain fitness otherwise.

    As for hanging onto some of your fitness, why not get a turbo trainer?

    Thanks for all the kind words, however I think I confused matters by mentioning bikes in the same post. Ultimately, my wife is not into bikes at all and doesn’t want one. I’d use a bike/trailer on segrateted cycle infrastructure or on trails etc, but I always feel like speed and the agility of a road bike are one of the things that keep me alive on public roads, so don’t intend to mix the kids up in the traffic.

    So, we need a double buggy, and have found one which sits the babies side-by-side but can fit through a normal door, as we don’t want/need a 4×4-sized thing for them.

    Things are a bit mental now though – we’ve been told to have the emergency labour bag ready from 6 months, there’s all manner of stuff we need to buy, the spare room needs turning into the babies room, the office needs turning into the spare room, the kitchen and dining room are being knocked into one so one adult can keep an eye on two babies while cooking etc, the kitchen’s being updated…madness, but all very exciting.

    I do want to still get some time on the bike, but suspect I will probably get none for at least the first few months. (The road back to fitness will then be awful!) We’ve no kids yet, so suddenly having two is going to result in a handful.

    I’ll raise a separate thread re the bike, as I test rode an interesting number of bikes and bits.

    Congratulations. Hope it all goes well but don’t ignore your bikes completely – even the most devoted dad needs time to get out and ride.

    Author Josie Dew is a great example of someone who uses trailer buggies (and didn’t own a car, I don’t know if that’s still the case). She used to have a Burley though she’s running a Nihola trike from practicalcycles.com now that her kids are a little older.

    What bike did you buy?

    Congratulations to both of you 😀

    My kids are 9 and 13 and to be honest it was cheaper when they were toddlers so make the most of your bikes now cos you’ll never get a new one once they are older 😉

    I can also recommend getting a Croozer. We had a 2 seat version and they are brilliant bits of kit.

    My wife’s now just over a week overdue, so I’m well aware of the multifarious expenses junior will incur, and that counts double for you!

    In my experience, the money-saving aspect of buying a bike tends to wear thin when you’re in n+1 terrritory (but give it a go anyway; and you can also start thinking about justifying the baby seats, trailer, the balance bikes and perhaps even a full blown cargo rig that you’ll DEFINITELY need).

    congrats!

    For buggies – go second-hand. Gumtree is ideal. We bought ours at 38 weeks gestation – made no sense having it taking up room earlier.

    My partner and I seriously considered a bakfiets. But it comes down to the fact that we like our normal bikes too much – and wanted to take turns at who did the towing – so we went with a trailer.

    Is there a best trailer thread, by the way?

    My advice would be –

    – steer clear of the shoddy ebay / halfords ones. We didn’t buy one but just inspecting it in Halfords was enough.

    – get a Croozer! They do 1 seat and 2 seat models, so you can take the little one(s) with you:
