If I build it, will they come? New 100km/1500m sportive in northern Hampshire

    I’m thinking to put on a sportive on the uber-quiet lanes of the North Hampshire Downs – 101km, 1530m climbing including the highest spot in the Southeast. Accessable by train an hour from Waterloo, or M3/M4 an hour from LHR.

    Two refreshment stops at country pubs, start/finish at the local primary school grounds, proceeds to the school.

    Not a closed-road event but hardly needed, as you’d be lucky to see a dozen cars over this 101km on a weekend.

    Would this likely be of interest? What entry price point would be right?

    Any/all opinions/suggestions welcome. Thanks

    how about a middle ground,
    how about a middle ground, grass-rootsy kind of a sportive? like the fred whitton or the HONC. they’re much more fun than the big slick ones.

    sportident timing (with the dibbers) is fairly cheap to hire and discourages people from racing it as you have to wait to dib your dibber. it changes the dynamic a bit. HONC just uses volunteers who mark your timing card. that’s even cheaper, assuming you have plenty of volunteers.

    make sure there’s plenty of cake.

    If I wanted weirdy-beardy I’d visit a ham radio meetup.

    Seriously though, I’m already organising a 200km Audax event this summer, before all the paid-up Audaxers start a-hatin’. This is much more a mainstream, semi-mass-start, big party at the end type thing.

    And Audaxers don’t have any money. They blow it all on fig newtons and LED headtourches used to fix flats in A-road laybys at 3am.

    As a new sportive, you would be wise to put on more than one route. Yes this might be a pain, but it will attract more people. If you look at most sportive’s these days, The have at least two, normally three routes.

    You will always get the people who want to push themselves round a massive course, but you will always get more looking to do a nice leisurely ride with friends and other like minded people. 😉
