Garage bike storage

I’m looking for inspiration on how to store a few bikes in my garage in a nice, space-efficient way.

At the moment I’ve got four (ish) bikes on wheelstands that take up all the floorspace in it, but for n+1 reasons, it would go down really well to get things a bit tidier.

Homebrew service course setup? Expensive metal hooks drilled into the walls? Meathooks hanging from the rafters?

    I’ve screwed some old hanging
I’ve screwed some old hanging basket brackets to my breeze block garage and used foam pipe insulation to protect the frame. Each bracket supports the top tube. Also used some redundant adjustable wall brackets designed for holding a microwave oven:

I currently have four bikes in my standard sized garage AND I can park my medium sized car in there, only one bike is kept on the floor, the others are hung up on a side wall, also I have shelving and tools stored too!

I was thinking of hooks on the wall of the shed and cross-bracing the other walls.
But these look a better solution.
    Much carpentry ability required?
And how long did it take to knock one up?

Very limited carpentry skills required – I didn’t have any before I started, and not much more now! So long as you can measure, saw and screw self-tapping screws, they are pretty easy! I built all four in a day’s work (a long day, admittedly, but as I said, my carpentry skills are limited!).

    Good luck working something out.

I’ve got to add that being in a rented flat, I could not put heavy duty screws fixings through the walls, and the rail can be moved easily or even put on castors to help that.
There are plenty of very cheap specialised hooks to hang bikes from garages walls.

From time to time Lidl sells a garage/shed-roof-mounting pulley system for about twelve quid. Strong and easy to use. Worth keeping an eye open for.

Decathlon have some simple hooks that you screw to the wall. I have 5 bikes hanging of these:

we’ve got 5 road bikes at home hanging of a very simple setup:
    a 1.8m long by 1.9m high industrial clothes rail : £30 quid:

and some home made hooks with B&Q double hooks with some straps to hang them off the rail, and bits of old inner tube to protect the rims.

Add a plastic sheet to collect all the crap from the commute bikes, and you’ve got a solution for 5/6bikes in a small area indoors for roughly £60-£70.

I won’t add a picture fo the whole thing for security reasons as highlighted by Simon E, but here’s one of the hook we’ve got.

Don’t wish to cast a cloud over this but I’m currently rethinking my bike security after two serious bike thefts in Shropshire in the last couple of weeks. One chap had his TT bike, 2 road bikes and a MTB nicked. The most recent haul was worth £17,000!

    B&Q do
    B&Q do these:

Think they were £15 each or something. I have it drilled straight into the wall, you could just buy several and arrange as necessary.

That’s great! Did you put it together from a plan, or are you one of those people that can just knock things up off the top of your head?

If it was from a plan, could you point me in the direction? Cheers.

I built four of these for my bike room. Super sturdy, good value (about £150 for the wood for 8 bikes do much cheaper than commercially bought stands) and they can be freely moved around without marking walls or ceilings. http://m.instructables.com/id/Vertical-Bike-Rack-from-2x4s/
