Ultegra triple and sram rival

    I want to put ultegra groupset triple on new bike as using mainly in europe in mountains and compact with 50/34 front and 11-28 rear cassette does not give me the right gears for mountain or right range for all eventualities. Want bike light as possible. Actually Sram Rival was my first option but bike shop advised against SRAM.

    What Ultegra should I ask for – saw that 2012 ultegra 6700 is lighter (150 grams) than previous version but also see chainset model 6703 and talk of hollowteck technology – a bit confused but want to give LBS clear instructions. Also what is view on Sram? Also what is weight diff between rival and ultegra triple?

    30/28 (triple Shimano) and 34/32 (compact SRAM) are effectively the same gear.

    30/30 is the lowest gear you can have on a fully road setup, new shimano 30t compatible rear mech with a triple up front

    Thanks for all comments on this topic. Real issue was that i wanted a bike for long gruelling climbs in dolomites with my fit brother in law. So wanted light as possible with good range of gears. Lbs was against SRAM which i kind of favoured as has climbing kit. Lbs suggested Ultegra triple but now I see range still limited to 30 front x 28 tooth rear. Today i find ultegra has brought out rear derailleur that can do 30! However talking to some other cyclists and they recommend sram so now going back to RIVAL option. I have been until recently a mountain biker so gearing never an issue so just confused by different possibilities.

    to be honest it’s not a great mix; sram derailluers have different actuation ratios to shimano ones. you’re better off running one or the other.

    triple chainsets tend to be 200g or so heavier than compacts. if you’re worried that you’re not fit (or light) enough to run a compact setup, i’d argue that 200g probably isn’t going to be your limiting factor.

    SRAM WiFLi (50/34 and 11-32) has a similar bottom gear to a Shimano triple (50/39/30 and 11-28), there’s not much in it. you get closer ratios with a triple, a compact is lighter. Both have their advocates, I can vouch for either as perfectly functional.

    But can you put Sram at rear and mix with shimano ultegra compact at front? What shifters and cables would this imply? Also what is difference between ultegra 6703 and 6700?

    Shimano 6703 is the Ultegra
    Shimano 6703 is the Ultegra triple groupset and the advantage over a compact is that it gives you more of a range of gears.

    If you decide on a compact chainset based upon weight saving then go for a long cage rear derailleur and then you have the option of using a cassette with a much bigger sprocket. I have a SRAM 12-34 I put on my 10 year old’s bike for when we cycle French mountains.

    I didn’t think SRAM offered
    I didn’t think SRAM offered the option of a triple front shifter, what with their super low double set up etc. I might be wrong of course. Never used their suff so don’t knw what the left/front shifter does.
