Pedro’s cable cutter versus Park Tools CN-10

    I’ve owned my Park Tools CN-10 professional cable cutter for over eleven years now. I paid about $34, it currently sells for about $49 / £36 on this side of the pond.

    I always though it did a bad job for a single purpose item. I have to use a pick to open up the hole in the crushed end. Then I read in a forum recently that a lot of mechanics indeed consider it bad, and if you have the money, get a Felco C7 (about $65 / £49), but the next best thing is Pedro’s (about $30 / £22.)

    So I ordered a Pedro’s, and the results are in the photos below. Although the Park CN-10 is used, it’s only been used by me, in my garage. I estimate I’ve made cuts with it on the order of a few dozen times. Certainly under a hundred.

    If Pedro’s is indeed a relabeled Felco, I agree! I’m not going to buy both just to compare them, though.

    Similar experience wiht the Park Tool cutter – threw it in the garbage after severeal failed attempts at sharpening and otherwise tweaking the damn thing. Happy with Knipex. BTW can’t see hot the Pedro’s cutter is the “next best thing” to Felco – surely they are the same tool (and therefore the best if they are indeed half the price)?

    That is both heartening and frustrating in equal measure. I too have had the CN-10 for many years. Uneven cuts and crushed casing on every single use, which led to a rare instance of a bad workman not blaming his tools but rather himself; I had always just assumed that the poor results were because I had failed to acquire the correct technique (despite experimenting with applying a range of different forces and speeds to the cut). The power of a brand name.

    A solid piece of product testing there, take a pat on the back, Andy. ‘Tis a shame it’s come too late for me though, now with AXS and hydraulic hoses, my need for cable cutters, no matter how good, has passed.😁

    I have the Park, perhaps 2 decades, a few years back I found titanium fids ONLINE, especially designed for the expansion of the inner tube bit. They work very well, but with further repeat searches, never found them again. And I have to file the rough ends of the spiral of the brake or the wires on the gear. The pedros looks better.

    Oh, and these photos are typical. I did three cuts with each, removing about 5 mm from the end each time, alternating cutters, and it was 100% consistent.
