Road Wheels : Advice needed : Budget £600.00…………

    Hello Road CC’ers,

    Need some advice please on what decent/lightweight/quality wheelset to buy. Budget is £600.00.
    Posh-bikes Tune 190/70 or Dura Ace 7810’s but coming from a MTBing background I’m unsure what to look for.

    I’m upgrading the DT Swiss wheelset that came on my 2 year old Cube GTC. I’m a lightweight rider 9 stone only!

    Any others I should look at around 1400-1500g.

    How do they fair against a straight pull. Most road wheels are straight pull spokes, is there a reason for that?

    Tunes are my own personal favourites but not common for roadies! See statement above.

    And am I right in saying the Tunes and Ksyriums are the only ones with sealed bearings. Essential.

    i’d go with the Tunes every
    i’d go with the Tunes every time.

    My friend has a pair and they ride beautifully whilst remaining stiff and come in under 1400g on dt 415 rims.

    The bearings are a semi-ceramic and the hubs are a pleasure to look at.

    they’re certainly on my wishlist of upgrades sometime!

    Thank you both for your suggestions, some of which were new to me.

    Checked them all out and to be fair and as previously stated they all look like they’ll easily do the job. Will assess again tomorrow.

    I’m full dura-ace on the Cube which might just sway the decision.

    Any more before I decide? I’m in no rush to buy as i won’t be using them until most of the salt has been naturally washed away from our roads (in the Highlands!)

    For your weight, you won’t
    For your weight, you won’t have any problem with any of the wheelsets out there. I weigh pretty much the same and even the lights wheels with very low spoke counts are more than stiff enough.

    The Dura-ace 7900 C24 carbon laminate clinchers are very highly respected and can be picked up for just over £500. Alternatively, I would look at the SRAM S30 AL Race’s which are only 1430g and have got a slightly more aero 30mm rim depth, they can be had for £579 at the moment from fudges. Aside from those, there are Mavic Kysrium SL’s, Fulcrum Racing 1’s or HED Ardennes, all of which are extremley capable wheels. Its just a case of which ones are best value for money, and of course which ones would look best on your bike 😀

    Personally I would go for either the Dura-ace’s or the SRAM S30’s.
