Tech Advice Needed!!!!

    Hi everyone, I’m looking for some help and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!I’m currently riding a 2011 model genesis equilibrium(10) and am looking at some upgrades for it but not sure what best to do. Wheels are a definite mod, but I plan on keeping the standard alex ones as a back up in case I get a ding on the new ones ( the roads up here in the western isles are terrible!)
    My main question is, if I keep the same running gear but with a second (Shimano HG-50 12/25T 9-spd)freewheel for the new rear for easy changeovers it’s obviously cheaper, but if I uprate the transmission to say a 10-speed 105 or Ultegra then how much of the system will i have to change? Not afraid of the spanners but obviously also not entirely clued up on the minutae of technical matters! :B
    #Oh – budget of £400 – £500 over and above the wheels! If I decide to go that way of course – all advice welcome! Thanks! B-)

    Thanks for the help guys. I reckon i might just stick with the 9 speed for the moment and maybe just upgrade the wheels and brakes. I’ll prob get a matching cassette for the new wheels and a spare chain and tubes/tyres are always handy to have. Many thanks once again!

    Really all you need to change
    Really all you need to change is…

    Cassette,
    Chain,
    Rear Shifter,

    Everything else can stay as is, however…

    You can only buy shifter/brake levers in pairs, and if your changing the front one you might want to consider changing the front mech too, a 9spd will change fine but a 10spd one will be a tiny bit better.

    Rear mech will be fine but many upgrade these, so your choice.

    Crankset i would only change for something much better, not 105, not enough in it. They will run 10spd as is.

    Your brakes are tektro? might be worth looking to upgrade them over the cranks.

    As for wheels, look at complete wheels reviewed by Road.cc, but my preference is to get a handbuilt set from my local shop/wheelbuilder.

    £500 will buy you a full 105
    £500 will buy you a full 105 (5700) groupset if you want to go down the 10spd route, so you wouldn’t really have to worry about compatibility issues. Or a SRAM Apex groupset, for that matter.
