Komoot thoughts

When I first started using Komoot, in order to reap it’s benefits I was required to buy at least a regional bundle, plus pay a periodic subscription. Having enjoyed that experience I was emboldened to take on the World bundle, the advantage of which was full access, with no further subscription required. Now it’s £4.99 per month to get what I have already paid for, or have I missed something?

I also bought the World Pack at some point back in antiquity, and have been successfully grandfathered in. Yes there are lots of annoying popups trying to get you to pay for premium, but you can ignore those. And there are some new features that are not available unless you pay for premium – having bought the World Pack doesn’t entitle you to “full access” of every feature automatically (even before the BS takeover, there were some premium-only features). But as far as I can tell, I can still do everything I could do before just fine.

BRouter-web FTW. Simple, free, easy to import&export, extremely configurable. Does exactly what I expect it to do.

OK, it does not offer a nice tour guide, but that’s something I just don’t need.

Komoot was my goto for a good number of years, it had it’s quirks, but once you were aware, you could work around them.

When they were bought by Bending Spoons, I feared the worst, and it seems i was right to do so.

I’ve thrown my lot (and a monthly) sub, in with Ride With GPS- it also has it’s quirks, but so far it’s not led me astray.

No grandfathering in for this old grandad. Zero response from Komoot, money down the drain; so it’s back to Garmin for me.

If you got the World Pack before February 2025, you should be grandfathered in. Just checked mine and it looks fine, the pop up that comes up seems to be an advert to try and get you to pony up £59.99 a year or £4.99 a week(!). I just clicked on the cross top left to close it (on iOS, might be different on Android) went into my profile, and confirmed I still had the World Pack.

TBH I only use Komoot to occasionally find suggested routes, and export to Garmin Connect, I don’t use any of the on-bike or turn by turn features, so don’t know if that’s missing now.
