I have an old Vitus 979 Dural bonded aluminium frame and the bond between the seat tube and the bottom bracket has come apart. Does anybody know if it can be repaired and who could do it?

    Yes, the alloy tubes are
Yes, the alloy tubes are bonded with a dry heat epoxy to cast alloy lugs. It would be nice to get the main tubes replaced otherwise it will remain hung up to just look at because it is pretty but probably too dangerous to ride.

    No More Nails?

    seriously
    No More Nails?

    🙂

seriously though, bike companies only say ‘bonded’ because no-one would buy a ‘glued’ frame, that’s all it is. the strength of the bond is in the preparation of the surfaces as much as anything. The stuff they use to glue it isn’t much more technical than araldite, so far as i’m aware. not that i’m advocating a DIY job 😕 😕

When you say ‘bonded’ do you
When you say ‘bonded’ do you mean lugged and glued? If you do that might be tricky and I’m not sure it would be that advisable either. I saw a bonded Vitus snap once – it was nearly very nasty indeed.
