Pricing bikes for sale

    OK, so I recently acquired a new bike through C2W and I have decided I’m going to sell my other two.

    Neither is particularly special – both are “just” hybrids – but both are reliable workhorses.  And both had complete overhauls (new bottom brackets, new drivetrains, new rims on one of them) within the last two years.

    I cannot possibly ask even enough money to cover what I spent on overhauling them – nobody would pay that for these bikes – so what do I do?  Do I just ask for some random amount that I think somebody will pay?

    The important thing is – TBH – making some room in my shed

    You could investigate what others are charging for similar bikes – noting that some longer-posted ads may be due to over-optimistic asking prices. Worth allowing yourself a little margin to offer in negotiation – although I’ve found that people don’t seem to haggle much these days (especially scammers on Facebook who offer to buy without seeing the goods!)

    Use multiple platforms too – of the major ones, I haven’t found one to be hugely better than the others. Good photos and details should help too.

    I find the best way of getting an approximate market value for secondhand bikes is to go on eBay and ignore the asking prices for active sales (some people are quite extraordinarily optimistic) but go to the “advanced” search options and search for your make of bike with “Sold items”, as long as the bike you’re selling is relatively common you should get enough examples to allow you to come up with a reasonable idea of the prices people are prepared to pay.
