Not cycling related as such but I have seen this subject discussed here several times over the years. This is the first time I have see a lifetime driving ban given for death by dangerous driving. Has there been a change in legislation or sentencing guidlines, or is it simply one of those rare time that a judge actually has the bottle to do it.

From the previous story – https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cdjlnvpex1ko

He was convicted at the High Court in Glasgow and remanded in custody pending sentencing. So he may have been in prison in Inverness at the time of the sentencing hearing.

    I assumed they never happened

I assumed they never happened so this really surprised me

In 2021, the Ministry of Justice reports that lifetime bans increased to 251, up from 9 in 2020 and 12 in 2019.

AVZ Blog (August 2022) Driving bans are still too rare

Seems unlikely, since they’re from the area where the offence was committed.

Maybe Inverness has more free court capacity than Glasgow?

    They get given out, but

They get given out, but pretty rarely. The only other one I know of is a driver who killed a pedestrian having killed another a few years before.
