Elinor Barker wins points race gold medal for Great Britain

Welsh rider was locked in titanic battle for he rainbow jersey with US rider Sarah Hammer

Elinor Barker has won Great Britain’s second gold medal at the 2017 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Hong Kong, which finished today.

She battled throughout the race with Sarah Hammer of the United States and gained a second lap late on to secure the rainbow jersey.

That gave the Cardiff rider 59 points, eight ahead of Hammer.  Kirsten Wild iof the Netherlands toojk bronze with 35 points.

It’s the 22-year-old’s third track world championship title, the other two both coming in the team pursuit, an event in which she won gold with Team GB at Rio last year.

Barker said afterwards: "I'm incredibly happy. Until the last lap it was looking like another silver. I'm so happy it was a gold."

Earlier in the championships, Barker was second in the scratch race and also took silver in the Madison yesterday with Emily Nelson.

Victory in the points race wasn’t her only result today.

The British team return from Hong Kong with two gold medals – the other from Katie Archibald in the Omnium – and two silver and one bronze medals.

Yeah, what a cracker. Hammer probably fluffed it by joining the rest before the easy sprint points, but then she looked a bit done in by the effort to get there.

Nice one Elinor!
