Romain Bardet’s winning ride on Strava - 34kph average speed with 3,419m of climbing

Lots of climbing and trophies for Romain Bardet's victory on stage 19 of the Tour de France...

Romain Bardet won stage 19 of the Tour de France and with his victory, moved up to second on the overall, behind the yellow jersey Chris Froome. Summing up his elation at winning, he titled his activity “I have no words =).”

Bardet is one of the few professionals to use Strava, and has uploaded his winning ride. The stage, according to his Strava upload, featured 3,419m of climbing which took him 4hrs 14min, providing an astonishing average speed of 34kph. Could you manage that over such hilly terrain?

No power data from his activity, which is a shame: it would have been very interesting to see his average power output on the final climb. Other data shows us that he hit a maximum speed on 89.6kph, and his average cadence was 83.

Bardet made his move on the D343 à Le Bettex climb, and as you’d expect, he clinched the KOM for this section.  The climb is 3.6km long with 322m of vertical elevation gain, and it took Bardet 10mins 36secs, with an average speed of 20.6km and cadence of 81.

He was using a Garmin Edge 520 to record his ride. You can read our review of it here.
