Independent Fabrication updates XSOS titanium/carbon frameset with disc brakes

Titanium and carbon fibre frame gets a disc brake makeover with a new titanium rear triangle

Independent Fabrication has revealed an updated XSOS, a frame that blends carbon fibre and titanium tubes, with a redesigned rear triangle to accommodate disc brakes.

First introduced two years ago, the XSOS was an update on the original XS, the US company’s first frame to combine carbon fibre main tubes with welded titanium lugs. It’s not a new idea: Specialized made a similar frame way back in 1992, and other highly esteemed US framebuilders like Merlin, Serotta and Seven have produced similar mixed material frames.

This new XSOS carries all the same features of the regular model, including oversized Enve main tubes and an Enve fork with a 1.5in tapered steerer tube making the most of the 44mm head tube, along with pressfit 30 bottom bracket.

The main change to this new model, and it's quite a major change, is the replacement of the carbon fibre seat stays  with an entirely new titanium rear triangle.

The brake mount has been positioned on the chainstay, a common approach that we’re seeing on most disc-equipped road bikes. The XSOS is a versatile bike, it has eyelets for mudguards and racks, and the location of the disc brake caliper avoids any compatibility issues.

Routing for the brake hose or cable is external, passing along the top of the chainstays and up the left side of the down tube. This frame features a brushed titanium matte carbon and white paint inside the ‘lug windows’.

As with all Independent Fabrication frames, the geometry of each frame is completely custom. This XSOS is “aimed at large riders and folks that are looking for a stiff, but comfortable ride,” says the company.

The frame starts from $5,995.

Why would you want discs ruining such a gorgeous frame? I don't suppose the price of the rim brake version is much cheaper.

Wow.

Don't tell me how much. I can tell I can't afford one.
