I’m tempted to enter the Two moors 100 sportive this July. I’m averaging 17-18mph on my usual rides and the furthest I’ve ridden on my road bike is 50miles.

Am I gonna get spat out the back in minutes, or will I be claiming Westcountry gold?

I decided not to do it in the
I decided not to do it in the end as I had a 24-hour mtb race the following weekend and Exmoor explorer yesterday. I thought 3 big events in 3 weekends was a bit silly. I’m definitely keen to start getting some road events in though.

As an update, I did the 2 moors 100 miler on the 19th July. The weather was pretty awful but funnily enough it was quite good fun. There were a lot of hills but some really nice bits too. If you do it next year don’t be fooled into thinking the hills around Dartmoor are any less challenging than the slopes of Exmoor. Especially with 65 miles already in your legs. There was a shorter 100Km route too. Next year there also may be another even shorter route available for novices (like me)

You would not have come last though this year. I took 9 and a half houres on an old 10 speed racing bike with shifters on the frame and I still wasn’t the last in.

I Urge anyone reading this to enter this sportif next year.

If you can ride 50 miles, you
If you can ride 50 miles, you can ride 100. But you need to make sure that you can save your legs. I’ve ridden some seriously steep hills in that area, and the 160 km sportif has 3000 metres of climbing, so I’d want at least a 34/28 gear available.

You’ll need to stay fuelled too, but I’m sure you’ll get round.

Just do it…put in some
Just do it…put in some miles and hills before then and go for it. What’s the worst that can happen? You’ll arrive back last, at least next time you can better your time!

I’m doing the Dragon Ride on Sunday and pretty much know that after 80 miles I’m going to be riding with one eye looking over my shoulder for the broom wagon! 😉

you’re fast enough, but you may not have the endurance to nail it at that speed the whole way. How long do you have until the event?

Boshing in a couple of 80milers between now and then will probably see your shorter distance av. speed increase too.

spat out the back? i doubt it, unless you’re hoping to stay with the lead riders all the way round. that pace will be a bit hot but if you can clock up 50 miles in three hours you won’t be last round. i’d concentrate on getting some longer rides in, doesn’t matter what pace but you need to get your body used to the longer rides and it’ll help you find your pace for 100.

How often do you ride, and
How often do you ride, and how much climbing is involved in those rides where you’re averaging 17-18mph? I take that’s your on-road speed? 😕
