Canyon bike advice please!

Advice needed! I am looking at Canyon bikes and like both the Endurace  CF 9.0 and Ultimate CF SL 9.0. I like the gearing set up on the Endurace with Di2 with a compact on the front and a 32 on the back. There are a lot of hills where we ride! I do like the Ultimate but worry about the gearing. However I am concenred that the ride set up would be too relaxed. Has anyone bought either of these bikes with the Di2 gear option?

PS - I know about their potential delivery issues - not in a hurry as I have a bike!

Cancel it.  These bikes have a very high failure rate. Just ask the carbon repair shop in Dorking.

Never heard of anything like that. In fact Canyon are one of the only companies who use a CT scanner on each frame and fork to ensure every bike that gets sent away is free of any cracks or voids in the carbon.  Maybe lots of people around that area own Canyons and make a habit of crashing......

Yes, when did Canyon bike become known for frame failure? News to me.

Was to me too, to be honest.  When I asked the repairer which frame they 'saw most', I expected them to say Cube - but apparently they're not even worth repairing.  Anectdotely my mate rides a well-spec'd Canyon that I've long admired. Perhaps crashing was the reason - I should have asked: but we had a fairly long discussion on the matter and I would have expected him to mention it. A propensity to crash for one frame rider over another is even more remarkable 1

I got the Ultimate CF SLX disc from stock with Di2 2 weeks ago. It arrived a week ahead of its predicted delivery date, 3 weeks from placing order. Had thought about equivalent Endurace model too but coming from an Aeroad didn't think the Ultimate was going to be overly racey/uncomfortable geometry wise. Semi compact chainset with a 28 suits me on the hills round here.

Is a wait of over a month considered speedy then?

Firstly it was 26 days, so less than a month.  Secondly I never claimed it was speedy, only that it was delivered when they said it would be delivered, which is not the situation they were in 12 months ago.

Anyway i don't consider that to be an unreasonable time to wait. You basically have two options, buy the bike you want and wait, or buy whatever you can find in stock at your LBS and accept compromise on model/spec or colour. I'm of the view that a couple of weeks wait is preferable  to riding a bike for years that was not your first choice.

No it's not a long time to wait for a company operating that model, I was just making the point that buying locally from the LBS (in stock or not), would be quicker.

Obviously if 'the bike you want' is a Canyon, then that's your only choice. And fair enough, they're great bikes. (Probably because Giant make 'em 3 )

11-32 will fit most bikes with a short cage. Just turn the B-screws all the way in.  Went to the alps last year and changed my bike over to 50/34 and 11/32 on a di2 shortcage.  No issues just make sure your chain is long enough or it may snap the rear derailleur.  I didn't need to change mine .

Compared to a bike in the thousands a new 11-32 cassette and a mid length derailleur is a tiny amount of money. I don't see how that's an issue. Just buy new ones. And if you want something even lower sell the crankset or chainrings on eBay and get a different one.

The real question is the fit. The different between them both is very small; basically you can turn an Ultimate into an Endurace by moving the entire front back 10mm and adding a 10mm spacer. For me that makes the Endurace slightly too short and cramped though (quite a bit shorter than my Synapse) which would lead to me needing a 120cm stem which I'm not fond of. But for you it might be fine? What's the stack and reach of your current bike and how does that compare to the two Canyons?

P.S. ignore reviews saying they handle different - its nonsense. They are basically the same geometry (seat tube angle, head tube angle etc) so with identical tyres and finishing equipment they will feel the same, length notwithstanding.

Thanks - it might make sense to buy the Ultimate in their recommended specs and then tinker if it doesn't suit. It might be that it would work for me anyway! Good advice ta.

It may not be as blingey as a sparkly new bike but instead of going for the Canyon you could splash out on a couple of sets of very good wheels. One pair for climbing and one deep section set.

In my experiance the wheels & the tyres that their shod with have a far bigger effect on the riding experiance than the frame.

Thanks - I upgraded my Cube wheels to Mavic Ksyrium Elites - made a huge difference. Dont necessarily need a new bike, just working on the n+1 rule!

Thanks. Riding a carbon Cube with compact on the front (I think!) and a 32 on the back. Need the 32 when slopes get above 10% which is common here in Devon. Asked if they would customise the Ultimate but they won't. I suspected it would be a relatively comfy ride.

Would be interesting to hear the Endurace perspective.

I've the ultimate, no Di2, got it back in October, delivery was one week early. Even on this racier version of the bike, I find it comfortable and the set-up relaxed. The bike is relatively tall at the front, compared to some race machines.

What gears do you ride now? This should probably influence your decision the most. I went from a standard 53-39 with a 25 on the rear so the Ultimate gearing has made hills a little easier for me.
