Boris Johnson and TfL launch major cycle safety campaign
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, and Transport for London (TfL) have announced a major cycle safety awareness campaign aimed at cyclists in the capital, accompanied by a major TV and cinema advertising campaign aimed at making drivers look out for the presence of cyclists on the streets.
BikeGrid proposed for Central London
Members of the London Cycling Campaign (LCC) have outlined their detailed proposals for a ‘BikeGrid’ providing key north to south and east to west routs for cyclists across the centre of the capital to Transport for London, first mooted last year.
The BikeGrid, which uses proposed cycle lanes or traffic-calmed roads to cross the heart of London would connect the arrival points in the city of Mayor Boris Johnson’s proposed Cycle Superhighways, and are also a response to the scrapping of the London Cycle Network, which had only been 60% completed.
Biking Boroughs plan for outer London gets green light from Mayor Boris
Boris Johnson and Transport for London have announced plans for 12 outer London boroughs to become outposts for cycling.
The 12 - Barking and Dagenham, Bexley, Brent, Bromley, Croydon, Ealing, Haringey, Havering, Hillingdon, Kingston, Merton and Redbridge - will become Biking Boroughs, receiving extra support and expertise from Transport for London (TfL) in a bid to encourage greater numbers of cyclists in their areas.
The boroughs will each receive £25,000 from TfL to fund a local study examining how cycle journeys can be increased.
Community cycling projects in London invited to apply for share of £250,000
Community-based cycling initiatives in London are being invited to apply for funding from Transport for London (TfL) to help achieve their goals, and in addition to amounts of up to £5,000 as awarded in previous years, particularly outstanding projects could benefit from a cash boost of up to £10,000 this time around.
Mayor of London confirms money for local transport improvements and Cycle Superhighways
London's Mayor today announced that he was giving the London Borough's £155m for local transport improvements including £1.49m to “support” Cycle Superhighways. The announcement comes hot on the heels of the release of details of the charging regime for his new bike hire scheme.
New walking and cycling bridge over the River Crane in London Borough of Richmond
The completion of a new bridge in Kneller Gardens, funded by Transport for London (TfL), will make it easier for people to get around Twickenham on foot and by bike from this week. The Kingfisher Bridge has been developed by the London Borough of Richmond and TfL with support from Sustrans and will provide a much-needed alternative to the existing narrow footbridge.
As well as helping people get to and from Kneller Gardens the bridge will also improve cycling and walking routes to Richmond Upon Thames College, the Stoop and Whitton Station.

Mayor and TfL release draft plan to improve cycle safety on London's streets
As the capital’s cycle revolution continues to gain pace Mayor Boris Johnson has today released draft details of a safety plan to keep the thousands of Londoners now taking to two wheels safer which can be downloaded from the TFL website. London's cyclists and the London Boroughs are now being asked for their comments.
The major focus of the safety plan is on reducing the number of casualties caused by HGVs as the plan says:
Liverpool Street Station gets major cycle parking overhaul
Liverpool Street station’s cycle parking capacity has more than doubled thanks to the installation of new two-tier cycle racks. The new facility has increased space from around 70 bikes to 189. The same type of racks were successfully installed at Surbiton and Wimbledon about five years ago.
Specialist company Cycle-Works installed the new German-designed Josta racks, which use an innovative rear wheel-locking design, allowing bikes to be safely lifted overhead. The improvement was funded by Transport for London's Centre for Cycling Excellence.
Cycle Fridays finish but two voluntary rides continue for commuters
Cycle Fridays have proved such a success that two voluntary guided rides will continue to run from Wimbledon and Greenwich to central London once a week - even though the official Cycle Friday rides have ended.
The rides will takes place tomorrow (Tuesday) at 8am from South Wimbledon to London Bridge, telephone Charles on 07590 077445 for details, and then on Wednesday at 7.45am from Cutty Sark to London Bridge.
