Padded shorts - a query

Today with great excitement i pulled on my first pair of padded cycling shorts for my 40 mile stint this morning,my question is this actually felt more uncomfortable than the previous 3000 miles ive done in normal shorts and running bottoms! Is this normal im guessing my butt got used to the seat and the padding is now pushing on different areas?!
Im in the process of buying a racing bike now resplendent with razorblade seat and figure if its uncomfortable on my MTB it'll be hell on a razorblade!
Not expensive shorts btw but padded none the less.

I'd give it a while to get used to them. Also do you have a very padded saddle? Padded shorts are designed to be worn with only lightly padded saddles.

Also if you do look at other shorts then DHB are good value at Wiggle. Personally I rarely bother with chamois cream and neither do a lot of pros.

I ride 100-200 miles per week, and mostly wear running leggings only (comando, obviously), mostly because it's part of my job to be on and off a bike a lot.

I always found thick padded shorts more uncomfortable due to the pressure being more distributed. My sit bones have been well trained now, and I do regular (nonstop) road rides of 20-35 miles without padding and with minimal problems.
I definitely try and wear some padding if I'm going over 30 miles though...

Try triathlon shorts! They tend to be very thinly padded and feel more natural. My absolute favorites are the Louis Garneau ones http://www.evanscycles.com/products/louis-garneau/2011-triathlon-power-g... (I have the womens version). I've used them happily on a couple of centuries rides.

Also just bought some dhb bibs - the padding inside is fairly thin and well shaped, and I now wear these for long stints on the bike.

P.S. I'm a girl (though this means I'm *ahem* anatomically softer down there anyway). Also I don't have a rock hard saddle - my Fizik Vesta is perfect. Firm enough, but you can't hammer nails with it. Go for something with a bit more cushioning.

Don't like the sound of your running bottom!! As above, don't wear pants. Might be worth investing in chamois cream. DZnuts or Rapha riding cream I can recommend.
I also think you probably get what you pay for. I have finally bitten the bullet and invested in some Assos shorts and some Rapha shorts. Definitely the best shorts I've ever had.

Expensive is a relative term I'd expect to pay £45 to £70 for a pair of shorts. As always rule one is go to a shop and have a look. Sizing can vary considerably between manufacturers. The pad quality is the biggest factor for me. Also you have o go "commando" for the pad to work effectively. No vpl
