British cyclist dies while riding on Mallorca - full details unclear for now

A British man has died on Mallorca while riding his bike on a coastal road close to the popular cycling resort of Pollensa.

The unnamed 49-year-old is reported by The Mirror to have been pronounced dead after going into cardiac arrest.

The incident is said to have happened at around 4pm on Sunday afternoon as the rider headed towards Cap de Formentor.

The island’s authorities confirmed that an inquiry had been opened, with details passed onto an investigating judge, as is routine under Spanish law.

The island is popular with British clubs and riders looking for riding in good weather during the springtime, although as yet it is not known whether the man who died was a resident or visitor.

In 2016, Graeme McGilvray of Lomond Roads CC lost his life while on a club trip following a collision involving a lorry.

The following year, 86-year-old Bryan Stout, described as a “stalwart” of London-based Catford CC and a campaigner with London Cycling Campaign and Stop Killing Cyclists, was killed in Alcudia when he was struck by a driver who tested positive for drink and drugs.
