A149 Norfolk coast road

This will probably be relevant to very few cyclists here but I just found myself staying in Hunstanton, Norfolk at short notice and wanted to get some info about local cycling before I went. Every forum/review said not to go anywhere near the A149 coast road as using it was very dangerous, 'life in your own hands etc' stuff. Use the NCR Route instead. Well, I 'risked' a 50 mile out and back to Cley today and saw less traffic (and far fewer white vans) than I would see every day round where I live in Wiltshire! The NCR on the other hand was dark, narrow, covered in a skid pan surface of fallen leaves and mud, and horrible. YMMV of course, but I had  a blast, pushed along by a strong tailwind (coming back was harder!) and never felt unsafe and never had a queue of vehicles building up behind me.  Yes, in summer (especially at the weekend) it must be a totally different story and probably not worth bothering with, but mid week in November you get great views, a fast ride, and I'm really glad I did it. I'm really posting this as I found it  hard to find any alternative opinion on the net on this road and almost didn't bother, but if you're a reasonably confident roadie it's nowhere near the 'beast' it's made out to be. As I said YMMV, but I had a great time.

The section from Cromer to North Walsham is best avoided. The coast road itself isn't too bad I have found.
