Westminster terror incident: Man charged with attempted murder

Salih Khater appeared in court this morning following incident last week that left three cyclists injured

A man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder in connection with last Tuesday’s incident in Westminster in which a motorist drove a Ford Fiesta through a group of cyclists, injuring three, then crashed into a barrier outside the Houses of Parliament.

Salih Khater, aged 29 and a Sudanese-born UK national living in Birmingham, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court to be charged with the attempted murder of members of the public and the attempted murder of police officers.

Three cyclists were injured in the incident. One was treated at the scene, while the other two were taken to hospital to have their injuries treated but released later the same day.

The first charge relates to Khater driving his car through a group of cyclists waiting for traffic lights to change at the junction of Parliament Square and Abingdon Street, the second to the attempted murder of police officers at the barrier.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said that “due to the methodology, iconic location and the alleged targeting of civilians and police officers, the CPS [Crown Prosecution Service] are treating this case as terrorism.”

Khater remains in custody.
