My whippet is rather effective at dispatching squirrels. As long as they're of the grey pest category, it's not a problem.

Red squirrles, now that would be a different matter.

Presumably, your whippet knows to not interrupt the red squirrels when they're discussing geopolitical strategies.

Reminds me of when I was a kid and we went to visit some of my dads side of the family in Yorkshire somewhere. There was a cage on their kitchen table and me, being of the 'enquiring mind' persuasion, stuck my finger through the bars. I was NOT impressed when a ferret sank it's teeth right through the end of my finger !

Well, this topic seems to have taken a violent turn. I've never been bitten by a squirrel (once got bit by a guinea pig though it didn't mean it - I was trying to separate two fighting piggies and startled one of them).

Anyway, after reading this next (old) news report, I'd like to say that squirrels are the best animal and are much better than cats and dogs:

Politician who spoke out against squirrels hospitalised after ‘suicide bomber’ rodent causes bike to flip over

About six or seven years ago a twitchy nosed little rat attached itself to the back of my dog and proceeded to rip chinks out of her.

The same year another twitchy nosed little rat attacked two people on our local park by way of trying to rip their noses off....leading to a cull of said squirrels...

Not always quite as cute as we think...

Years ago, on one of my very first trips to Bristol (my wife is from here), we went onto Brandon Hill (city centre park, er, on a hill). "Let's feed the squirrels", says she. We had a packet of digestive biscuits.

So, with her encouragement, I hold out a biscuit. Squirrel comes over, pauses, looks up at me, comes closer. Takes hold of the biscuit in its cute little hands... Then sinks its teeth into my thumb: I drop the biscuit, blood everywhere, and the little b@st@rd scampers off carrying a bloodstained digestive biscuit.

And that, boys and girls, is why I hate the twitchy nosed little rats!
