Emily Chappell and friends ride Land's End to John O'Groats over New Year for charity

Trio hit more than six times their fundraising target for charity that helps homeless people in Scotland

While many of us were seeing in the New Year on Sunday and spending yesterday recovering, fomrer bike courier turned ultracyclist Emily Chappell and two friends were completing a four-day ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

Chappell, author of the book What Goes Around and the first woman to finish the 2016 Transcontinental Race, had been aiming to raise £500 for the Scottish charity Social Bite in the ride, which she undertook with Jenny Graham and Huw Oliver.

They wrote on Just Giving that they were undertaking the challenge “because no one should be cold & hungry at Christmas.”

The trio added: “It's a good excuse to get a few miles in and do some training for all the big things we have planned for 2018.

“More seriously, we'll be raising money to help people who have no choice but to be out in the rain and sleet and snow at this time of year.

“If you like the look of what we're doing (or if you're very glad it's not you), please consider donating to help Social Bite's excellent work.”

At the time of writing they had raised more than six  times their target, with more than 160 people donating money.

They had set out from Land’s End shortly before 5am on Friday 29 December, and arrived at John O’Groats just under 96 hours later at 4.45am this morning.
