Bike accident Putney Embankment

Hi everyone!

In August 2015 I fell off my bicycle whilst turning right into Rotherwood Road on the Putney embankment next to the Vesta  rowing club and was hospitalised with multiple fractures to my leg and ankle. A second cyclist fell at almost exactly the same spot whilst I was being attended to by the police pending arrival of an ambulance, and the same morning whilst I was cycling to work I saw a cyclist getting up and limping after having fallen at the very same spot. I recently met another cyclist who told me that she had also fallen from her bicycle at the same spot in February 2017 and that someone from the boathouse had kindly come to her assistance and told her that lots of cyclists had fallen there.

I was wondering if anyone were aware or had witnessed any other bike accidents at this spot, or if anyone is aware of why the road is slippery in this particular area?

Do you know if anyone has reported the slippery surface of the road to the Council?

If you were able to supply any information or comment it would be greatly appreciated, and I thank you in advance for any assistance you might be able to provide.

I'd agree with univ2293.   I used to work a few doors up and slipped bang onto my arse walking there after my job interview.  A factor that can make it worse is after very heavy rain, sewer overflows can discharge into the Thames giving it a nice film of grease on the surface.  If that gets deposited on the embankment it becomes filthy and lethally slippery.  The grease can also hang around for a while until it's washed off by another very high tide / rainfall.

I've not turned up there recently - I'd always continue to the end of the road. However, IIRC, the camber is slightly off, which could catch someone unawares.

The tide regularly washes up over the road at Putney Embankment.  All the houses are built higher up and the boathouses have flood doors to stop it coming in.  I preusme silt/algae must be left when the road clears.  If that was is, then I guess cyclists would have to proceed carefully along there as even Canute couldn't hold back the tide.

No, but if you believe it is defective it's your responsibility to report it. Doesn't matter if others already have - indeed it's more likely to be taken seriously if multiple reports are received.

www.fillthathole.org.uk will do - councils' own reporting pages often don't leave you a record of your report.

Seems odd, why is the surface slippy? From the google maps it looks like a bit of road in good condition? Have you checked the surface in multiple conditions?

Is this it here? https://goo.gl/maps/FrkcVhSYF3n

Was going to suggest you ask on Bikeradar commuting forum but see that you've put 3 posts over there already. LFGSS forum?
