2Toms Grip Shield is designed to keep hands dry and grip optimal in a wide range of sporting contexts. It does exactly what it says in the blurb – and for a very long time.

Grip Shield isn't cycling-specific but is aimed at those who play golf, baseball and hockey, skiers, gymnasts, mechanics and other contexts where a good grip is paramount. Applied rather like an anti-bacterial hand-wash, it dries in around 20 seconds or so.

One of the main ingredients is aluminium chloride hexahydrate, which is primarily used to curb excessive sweating and commonly found in anti-perspirerent deodorants. In many respects, it's easiest to think of it in those terms.

These and the other ingredients block the pores while repelling sweat, rain and other precipitation, so you maintain the best grip, even in really humid conditions.

Intended primarily for hands, it can also be used inside gloves and may keep them smelling fresher for longer. Talking of which, though claiming to be odourless, it has a subtle, clean fragrance that has also enabled me to track its staying prowess.

Tested initially from the (dis)comfort of the indoor trainer, I was amazed by just how little product was required to maintain a fly-paper like tenure with Benotto tape – a notoriously slippery old-school plastic wrap.

My hands remained completely arid after an hour's interval efforts, and I then took this opportunity to swap tyres and other components around. Grip on Allen keys and other tooling was also markedly better than without the Grip Shield barrier.

Six hours and a good long shower in between, I was still conscious of a thin, residual layer and that subtle scent. Subsequent, day-long outings have confirmed these characteristics and, sure enough, with full-finger middleweight gloves on, things felt more arid than usual. Shorter, 15-mile bare-handed blasts in some torrential rains failed to tax it, or my tenure on the leather wrap.

Turning up the heat a bit (quite literally), I've donned my dark shield, overalls, steel-toed boots and leather gauntlets for some serious gas and MIG welding sessions. Given a few hours in these temperatures, my hands were turning faintly clammy but considerably drier than usual.

So then, Grip Shield has definitely lived up to its hype and delivered in all contexts. Although £13.50 isn't cheap, it does go a surprisingly long way and, chances are, prove very good value in the long run.

To be expected perhaps, but the drying element can also leave your hands feeling uncomfortably so. For most folks this is easily countered with a decent lick of moisturiser afterwards, but might be a deal-breaker for those with particularly sensitive skin.

Because it works to the same principle as an anti-perspirant deodorant, while grip is excellent, the sensation of blocked pores can feel a little uncomfortable after several hours. By that point, my skin was beginning to feel uncomfortably dry.

Overall, the 2Toms Grip Shield is a surprisingly versatile product that genuinely aids grip in all contexts and lasts a very long time – I'd hoped so given the asking price. Though useful for cycling, riders who incorporate weights or gymnastics into their training regime are most likely to appreciate its properties.

Economical, long lasting and, moreover, very effective. Doesn't wash off easily, even with prolonged, warm showers and soap.

It works really well, doing exactly what it says on the tin, though it can feel uncomfortable after a few hours. A bit on the expensive side, but long lasting. Arguably, it's of most use to riders who incorporate weight lifting or gymnastics into their training. A 'very good' 8 overall.

What a terriblely written review though, words mis-used in an attempt by the author to look cleaver.  This is a review for a product, not an open forum for failed creative writers.  Please road.cc, get rid of these smart ass freelance writers and stick to proper product reviews.  Just in case the author is totally ignorant of his ignorance, look up the meanings of arid and tenure.

Just wish it was cheaper. If this stuff works it'll be perfect for climbing on the tops on slick aerobars. Must be a cheaper alternative around, no?

 

Edit: what about this, liquid chalk? Appears white on the skin, but you could just use it on the palms I guess.

My brother uses liquid chalk when he goes to the gym, it definitely gives you good grip, but it's a total pain to try to get it off your hands, and it does rub off onto clothes and surfaces as well, not sure I'd want that all over my bike.

Why would you want to use this on a bike? Surely you'd be wearing gloves.
