Abus reveals GameChanger aero helmet

New design used by professionals from Movistar Team will be available later in the year

All of the major helmet brands have aero options in their ranges these days, and Abus has joined the fray with its new GameChanger which is now being used by Movistar Team. It's certainly a distinctive looking lid.

Abus says that the amount of the GameChanger’s surface area that’s exposed to the wind is low in all conditions. The helmet is said to offer 23% less frontal surface area than the current top helmet in the Abus range.

The German brand claims that “airflow has been optimised for all head positions typical of racing”, so the GameChanger is designed to deliver an efficient performance regardless of the rider’s head tilt or the inflow angle.

Abus hasn’t released any figures relating to the GameChanger’s aero performance; none of that “it’ll save you x watts over y kilometres at z speed” stuff.

Ventilation comes courtesy of what Abus calls its Forced Air Cooling Technology – everything has to have a high tech-sounding name these days. The vents are interconnected to channel the air around the head.

Abus has named the rear section AirPort.

“The AirPort…. offers two decisive benefits: your glasses rest safely in the temple docks and they are fully integrated into the helmet design, which is a valuable aerodynamic advantage,” says Abus.

You can alter the fit via a Zoom Ace dial at the back.

Rather than using strap dividers, Abus uses fixed webbing FlowStraps and says that customisation isn’t necessary.

“Thanks to these specially designed straps, flutter and wind chatter is a thing of the past,” says Abus. “The FlowStraps are aerodynamic, flutter-free and skin-friendly – a patented Abus innovation.”

The Abus GameChanger will be available in the UK through ZyroFisher although a price has yet to be set.

From the front it reminds me of the massive Raleigh one I had in the late 90s, but can't now find a picture of.

Looks better than the trypophobia inducing Catlike lids Movistar used to ride!

There are many videos in YouTube showing Abus products being cut in two by a spinning disk. I would not rely on it at a peloton with other disk-braked bicycles.

I shall start my comment by saying that I am against any form of compulsion.  Having said that, it's quite a nice looking plastic hat, as these things go.  From the arty images anyway.

But does it MIPS? Side effects of head injury can be a right bitch.

so at the moment it's just a helmet that looks like a couple of other helmets, and is less frontal surface area than other abus helmets? Oh and has a wonky name...

It does, but it was only  my misreading it as game changer, and assuming it was an editorial description, that made me look closer..

I quite like that helmet..  However it does look like The Spesh Evade and Kask Protone got drunk one night at a party and this is the outcome..  (the secret life of a branded helmet). Hell I'm all for diversity!
