Video: Canyon talks disc brake road bikes + answers your questions

We ask Canyon to show us around the 2017 range at the London Bike Show

If you didn’t catch it on Facebook, we grabbed Canyon’s Matt Leake at the London Bike Show and got him to show us around the brand’s new disc brake road bike range. We also fired a bunch of road.cc readers’ questions at Canyon and took the opportunity to have a look at the superlight Ultimate CF Evo.

Check out our story on the new Canyon Ultimate CF Evo here.

Again, no vegan axe. Not sexist. Not whining. Not even anti Yorkshire. Just saying that if you hang around near articles about discs for a very short space of time someone will tell you why they're not for them.

But you've formed an opinion and try and shut people down by calling them sexist, hypocrites and saying they've got axes to grind when I've pointed out to you twice what I'm on about. Don't bother replying.

Said the guy who used an article about a Canyon Q&A to have a go at vegans.

Not having a go at Vegans or you lot from the other side of the Pennines. My point is that the old trope of "how do you know if someone is a vegan/from Yorkshire/anti disc brakes? They'll tell you" is becoming a thing.

Just don't understand all the hate. I have calliper brakes on all my bikes that aren't track and I don't feel like the adoption of disc brakes is the affront to my personal choices that some seem to make it out to be. If someone's happy with Campag rim brakes on a vintage bike then good on you, someone else has bought a disc brake equipped carbon £5k effort? Awesome - everyone's riding bikes.

I seem to have touched a raw nerve there, lack of meat can also make you a bit tetchy...

I'm not whining or criticising anyone. I'm saying that, in addition to the trope of certain groups being unable to resist telling you their views, you may add anti disc people to that list.

Also for someone who seems to be progressive it's weird you've assumed I'm a man which is... hmm.

Vegan axe and now a sexist axe to grind.

All on a Canyon Q&A.

Looking good there.

Shame the prices have gone up, getting closer to a retail floor sticker.

It feels more and more like anti-disc commentors are the new Yorkshiremen or Vegans in that there is seldom an opportunity missed to tell you why they won't buy them.

I am keen to at least try them myself - it would be nice to have a set of wheels that doesn't require rebuilding after a big winter like I had with my H Plus Son TB14's which needed retiring to the skip after a winter block that ended with the Tour of Flanders.

The push to discs rumbles on I see. I feel like Father Ted with Mrs Doyle not taikng no for an answer "Go on. Go on. Go on. You want disc brakes. No you do! Go on.."

The Canyon guy states that there is only '1-2%' disdvantage in the wind tunnel from using disk brakes. I assume that is from a frontal wind not a side wind...

Then with an extra 70 gms for structural strength with the torque on the left , the heat resistant carbon and the stainless steel fixing bolts... Then there's the 160 diameter to give 'more power and modulation' and less heat issues with long descents... Crikey. Talk about re-engineering the whole machine for marginal gains.

Then when discussing the pros, the riders that don't want disc brakes are described as 'conservative' yet in the next sentence the Canyon gent links the choice of discs more to weather conditions than whether you are an old fuddy duddy or not. With all the chatter about stopping distances in the peleton with mixed brakes they're going to have to make up their minds one way or the other in the next year or so and choose one system. I supect the whole new market potential will decide that one.

I'm not anti disk brakes. I'd perhaps invest in them for winter but as I don't go haring down hills at 40 mph in the wet at any time of the year and I've beensuccessfully  feathering the brakes rain or shine for 35 years now with no incidents. For the summer months I think I'll stick with my more elegant looking Ti frame the power modulation of 700's and trusty caliper Campags.

I liked this feature, would be good to see more.

And very pleased to hear the Aero-cockpit is coming as an optional extra.

I did see somewhere that the H11 Aerocockpit from the Aeroad is available as a standalone purchase for approximately $900AUD......pretty sure that was communicated by Canyon Australia on a forum. As for the H36, I haven't heard but would assume it'll be similar dollars. Too much for a handlebar/stem combo in my opinion but hey, there's always a market I guess....

Disappointed we won't see a lightweight Aeroad anytime soon, it's seemingly within their reach.

Also wanted to know about their choice of chainsets on the EVO. 52/36? Are the cassettes 11-25 too? Seems an odd choice for a dreamy climber's bike.
