Just In: DT Swiss ERC 1100 Dicut DB wheels

DT Swiss’s new ERC 1100 Dicut DB wheels have just arrived for review here at road.cc and we thought we’d give you a quick look before fitting them to a bike.

We first told you about these clincher tubeless ready wheels, developed with Swiss Side, before Christmas.

DT Swiss says that the disc brake wheelset, with 47mm deep rims, offers very low drag at all relevant yaw angles, along with comfort and reliability. They’re designed for use on gravel as well as tarmac.

According to the Swiss brand’s data, the ERC Dicut DB wheels have a similar aero performance to Reynolds Aero 46 and Zipp 303 Firecrest wheels.

DT Swiss reckons that what sets the ERC Dicut DB wheels apart is their handling. The rim’s geometry is said to mean that they react predictably when the yaw (apparent wind) angle changes, giving the rider the highest level of control over the bike. 

The rim shape is also designed to keep the force generated by the wind at the handlebars as low as possible, allowing you to hold an aero position for longer. The rider is always the source of way more drag than the bike, so anything that allows you to stay in an efficient position will always be good news.

The rims have an internal width of 19mm and a maximum external width of 27mm. They’ve been optimised for the use of wide (28mm) tyres because the wider contact area and lower pressure of the tyre results in more grip and more comfort. Plus, a wide contact patch leads to lower rolling resistance.

The hubshell has been reshaped over that of the regular Dicut hub to minimise the airflow surface and reduce drag by a claimed 0.4 watts at 45km/h. The hubs are based on DT Swiss 240s. They run on Sinc Ceramic bearings and are held in place by a new version of the RWS axle system with a Plug In lever that you can remove for improved aerodynamics.

The front wheel (without rim tape or skewer) weighs 695g while the rear is 802g. That’s a total of 1,497g. They have a recommended retail price of £1,999.98.
