Scottish police appeal for witnesses after hit-and-run seriously injures cyclist

White van man fails to stop

Scottish police are appealing for witnesses after a cyclist was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash in Stirlingshire on Saturday.

The BBC reports that a 47-year-old male rider was on the B822 Kippen to Fintry road just west of Kippen at about 13:45 on Saturday when he was struck by a van whose driver failed to stop.

The rider was taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital. The van that hit him is believed to be white.

Sgt Andrew Thomson said: "I am keen to hear from anyone who was using the B822 between Kippen and the village of Fintry around the time of the collision.

"The cyclist suffered some painful injuries and the driver of the other vehicle did not stop.

"Anyone who can help us trace this individual or who has information that can assist with our ongoing enquiries is asked to come forward."

Anyone who with information can contact Police Scotland on the non-emergency number 101 or information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

He was heavily involved in the mountain bike boom of the late 1980s as a racer, team manager and race promoter, and that led to writing for Mountain Biking UK magazine shortly after its inception. He got the gig by phoning up the editor and telling him the magazine was rubbish and he could do better. Rather than telling him to get lost, MBUK editor Tym Manley called John’s bluff and the rest is history.

Since then he has worked on MTB Pro magazine and was editor of Maximum Mountain Bike and Australian Mountain Bike magazines, before switching to the web in 2000 to work for CyclingNews.com. Along with road.cc founder Tony Farrelly, John was on the launch team for BikeRadar.com and subsequently became editor in chief of Future Publishing’s group of cycling magazines and websites, including Cycling Plus, MBUK, What Mountain Bike and Procycling.

John has also written for Cyclist magazine, edited the BikeMagic website and was founding editor of TotalWomensCycling.com before handing over to someone far more representative of the site's main audience.

He joined road.cc in 2013. He lives in Cambridge where the lack of hills is more than made up for by the headwinds.

I have been impressed with most drivers around this popular cycling area in the last few years, a real shame to hear this. Get well soon fella.

Oh, and if you are the chump who did this, do the right thing and go and hand yerself in... if you can scrape that spineless carcass up off the sofa.

White van man didn't stop? I'm shocked, I tell you. Shocked.

I hope the rider make a full recovery too.

At least the Scottish police are dealing with it as a hit and run, unlike the Hampshire police

Do driver have no responsibility for whatever they're towing? 102 Hampshire police sort it out!

This is a popular road for cyclists. It is not busy and has a nice climb.

I do hope the injured party makes a full recovery.

I know it could have been me as it is a road I use quite often. It brings stories you read about close to home when that is the case.
