What bike is this? Ikea x-ray bike poster leaves cyclists guessing

We just had this brought to our attention and thought we'd see if you could be any help in our (albeit pointless) quest to find the answer!

This rather unusual framed poster being sold by Swedish flat-packed furniture merchants Ikea was recently brought to our attention... but can you guess which bike it is?

We've been scratching our heads in the office and have a couple of best guesses, but haven't managed to vote on a definitive answer just yet. Here's the full pic as our lead image above may have been a bit unintentionally cropped...

skeleton bike ikea

It appears to be for sale only on the German version of the Ikea website for €39.99 (link here), and is known as the 'Katebo'. Our x-ray cyclist appears to be riding something pretty racey, but the rim brakes with a few cables on show and the not-so-aero fork would suggest this isn't an aero road bike launched in the last couple of years at least. What do you think, is it even a shadow of an actual existing bike or have we been taken for a flat-packed ride? And for extra nerd points, can you identify what the groupset, wheels and the rider's helmet is?

The poster and subsequent guessing game was sent to us from Trevor Hughes, director at Vielo Sports... go check out the Vielo website here and our glowing review of their Vielo V+1 adventure bike here

Arriving at road.cc in 2017 via 220 Triathlon Magazine, Jack dipped his toe in most jobs on the site and over at eBikeTips before being named the new editor of road.cc in 2020, much to his surprise. His cycling life began during his students days, when he cobbled together a few hundred quid off the back of a hard winter selling hats (long story) and bought his first road bike - a Trek 1.1 that was quickly relegated to winter steed, before it was sadly pinched a few years later. Creatively replacing it with a Trek 1.2, Jack mostly rides this bike around local cycle paths nowadays, but when he wants to get the racer out and be competitive his preferred events are time trials, sportives, triathlons and pogo sticking - the latter being another long story.

Thanks for the article.

I ordered one of the now. I'm a big fan of Nick Veasey.

The wheels are about 50mm deep with internal nipples and aluminium brake tracks - maybe Mavic cosmic sl/sls?

igoramadas is correct, as far as I can tell

Ridley Noah RS 2012

I layered up different pics to see what matched. It was close between Noah 2103 (too curved) and Noah RS 2011. The tell tale is the cut out behind the seat tube and the distinctive seat post shape.

Nick Veasey giving his talk on Ted. As he using dead people or old skeletons, that might narrow down the rider choices! He uses one called Frida.

No sign of a concealed motor which is pleasing to see.

Are you saying that it's not a Pinarello then?

Well, it doesn't say "Pinarello" in three inch letters along the tube...   3

Looks like Shimano gearing, possibly a Bianchi frame. As to the cyclists being sprinter or climber there may be a clue in the foot on the pedal as the big bone behind the big toe, (ball of foot) seems to be slightly behind the pedal centre perhaps favouring a climber. All good fun speculating, now awaiting the definitive answer from Sherlock Holmes!

looking at the gear cables in the downtube, they appear to form one, would tht indicate a Di2 groupset

stoopid question from me, I want to delete this comment, they are internal cables on cablestops that from this angle have the same cable run for the inners

I'm surprised nothing has been said about that rear brake cable. Internal or not it would be dead straight.

If it is an internal cable with a full length outer , ie no mid cable endstops then I believe it could follow this kind of line

God that's hard.. it's the curved front fork which is throwing me...  it looks like a Trek or Bianchi with the down tube and seatpost.. however I can't identify it.

Giro Atmos Helmet, I'm happy with that.

Pedals are Shimano.

Their shoes are flexy.

This is the work of the excellent Nick Veasey - take a look at http://www.nickveasey.com/ and https://twitter.com/xrayveasey for some more x-ray art.

Helmets a Mavic Aksium by the looks of it and it's a Shimano groupset from the 4 bolt cranks and hoods

Agreed... I reckon its a Ridley due to the humped top tube, but a bit thrown by the seatpost clamp... the Noah has an integrated seatpost.

Edit to add... the model I looked at did, but the link above looks spot on to me.

Can we identify the rider? They look pretty lean, so maybe a climber.

Should be able to spot, they have no skin, muscles or internal organs.
