Female cyclist killed during London rush hour this morning, tipper lorry reportedly involved

Incident took place on Victoria Street at 8.20am; tipper lorry believed to be involved

A female cyclist believed to be aged in her 20s has been killed in this morning’s London rush hour, reportedly following a collision with a tipper lorry on Victoria Street.

The incident happened at around 8.20am close to the junction with Palace Street, reports the London Evening Standard.

A spokeswoman for London Ambulance Service told the newspaper: "We were called at 8.20 to reports of a road traffic collision on Victoria Street.

“We sent a motorcycle responder, an ambulance crew and a duty officer to the scene. The first arrived in 3 minutes.

“Sadly the patient, a woman reported to be in her 20s, was dead at the scene."

It is believed that the lorry involved was a tipper truck, and several major construction projects are being undertaken in the area.

One Twitter user, symroe, posted: “So sad to hear of the death of a lady on a bike on Victoria Street. I cycle & get worried by the builder's lorries there every day.”

Another user, jamesup, tweeted: "Victoria street cyclist-down seems to be one of the big tipper lorry's from developments round here. Very sad."

While full details are yet to be confirmed, this morning’s incident appears to underline some sadly all too common features of cyclist fatalities in the capital.

According to London Cycling Campaign, lorries account for 5 per cent of the city’s traffic, but are involved in half of incidents that result in a cyclist being killed.

Construction lorries are involved in many of those fatal incidents, and a disproportionate number of victims are young females.

Bloody Hell, that's just down the road from School.

Never normally cycle that way.

Sad.

used that corner a few times myself. Brings home how vulnerable you are when this happens.

Extremely sad. I always thought that these terrible accidents happen due to the size of the lorries and the limited visibility off the cabin but recent first hand experience of mine also somewhat points towards the drivers' attitude. A massive skip lorry pinched me on a left turn out of the roundabout , him overtaking and changing lanes before the turn. The worst did not happen only because of good awareness of the problem and bike handling skills. This incident was followed by a very loud exchange at the next junction out of which I learned: the driver saw me very well before the manouvre, he didn't admit any mistake, he claimed I as a cyclist need to be more careful, he clarly thinks of cyclists as very anoying obstacles on the road. Has anyone got similar story?

So sorry to hear the sad news - at 8:23 I went past the House of Fraser end where it was closed off and there was an ominous sense of quiet. Black cloud - black day.

One death today which we can be genuinely sad about at least, but it will make few headlines 2 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-22063925
