Pro bikes: Team Wiggle Honda’s Colnago C59
The new Wiggle Honda Women’s Pro Cycling team launched today in London and along with a star-studded lineup of riders, that includes Dani King, Joanna Rowsell and Laura Trott, revealed they'll be riding Colnago C59 race bikes with Campagnolo Super Record EPS groupsets.
Colnago’s C59 (read our review) is the Italian company’s flagship race bike and is, in my opinion, the most elegant bike in the peloton. The C59 has been around for a couple of years. It was four years in development and comprises the company’s latest carbon fibre developments to produce a frame, hand built in Cambiago, Italy, that weighs 950g.
It’s made using carbon fibre lugs with the tubes bonded into them, giving the frame is traditional look. It’s a more time consuming construction method but does allow Colnago to offer a wider range of sizes, and to go small enough for some of the women on the new team.
The head tube is tapered, 1.25″ at the bottom and 1.125″ at the top. The downtube has an internal I-Beam running from head tube to bottom bracket, this serves to add additional stiffness to the tube. The cables are routed internally, though as we can see in this photo some are made redundant with the fitting of Campagnolo’s electronic groupset, EPS.
We’re seeing a lot of Campagnolo sponsored teams switch to Super Record EPS this year, after just a few teams dabbled with it this year. It’s the first year we’ve seen such widespread adoption of electronically shifting drivetrains.
Campagnolo also supply the teams wheels, the deep-section Bora’s spotted here. Continental supply the team with tyres, and Deda the handlebars and stems. I spotted several bar/stem configurations on the team bikes that were at the launch, they’re not all riding one-piece affairs like this one.
Fizik are onboard as well, and supply the team with saddles and bar tape. Finally, water bottles are from Tacx.
Expect to see these bikes going very fast this season.

Odd mix of stems and seatposts on these bikes. From Zero1 stems in deda's budget box right up to the integrated bar and stem..
That is a sweet bike.
For sure the bike is top drawer must have got the groupsets for free.Strange Wiggins part owns this new team and he rides Shimano.Side note;Big Mig used Campag when he got it for free.When he retired he Bought a Cannondale with Shimano Dura ace with he's own money.Strange that! because Campag used to love the Indurain wins TDf again on Campagnolo line

The Campag battery is also the brain of the unit, unlike Shimano.
Why oh why are frame manufacturers not making their bikes with an internal battery compartment?
They all claim to be fully electronic ready, then they go and stick a bloody great battery to the underside of it with a bit of velcro and double sided sticky tape. All that effort with aesthetics and aerodynamics, all the bobbins about tube profiles but as for the battery, we're quite happy just to bolt it right in the firing line of all the crap thrown up off the front wheel.
Canyon bikes do internal Di2 batteries. I'm sure other manufacturers could do similarly.
That's down to Shimano and Campagnolo not having produced batteries that are small enough to be easily concealed within the frame. Shimano now have a battery that is designed to be fitted inside the seat post, and we expect to see many new bikes coming with this. It'll take a while to filter down though
The Campagnolo battery is a porker, much bigger than Di2 - be a hard job to get it inside the frame. I imagine they must be working on a similar solution to Shimano, but don't hold your breath

Yes, it's a shame that anything above Athena is only available in black or carbon.
I run both Shimano and Campagnolo and Campagnolo's my fave.

Funny but not true. My Shimano Tiagra rear mech (winter bike) changes a tad quicker than my Campag Chorus (summer bike). I do prefer the Campag though for function and looks. However I would agree that polished silver, a la Nuovo Record, does look the absolute business. Too much black (Johnny!!) these days.
