Three pro cyclists killed in South Korea as lorry ploughs into group on training ride

Four others seriously injured in incident in southeast of country yesterday morning

Three professional cyclists were killed yesterday and five other people injured when a 25-ton lorry crashed into the group they were riding in, reports the Korea Herald.

The newspaper says that the victims were on a training ride in Uiseong County, North Gyeongsang Province in the southeast of the country when the incident occurred at 9.50am yesterday morning.

According to local police, the lorry, which was said to have been speeding, hit a minivan that had been following the riders before crashing into the rear of the group.

The three cyclists who lost their lives were pronounced dead at the scene, while four others were said to have been seriously injured.

The coach of the cycling team, which is said to be connected with the city government of Sangju, was a passenger in the minivan and himself suffered a minor injury.

Police are reportedly investigating what caused the incident.

Very sad. Condolences to the family.

Simply driving a motor vehicle in South Korea is dangerous. I lived 15 months in Korea; if you visit Seoul, don't ride bikes...you need to take the train. The traffic laws are rarely enforced and rush hour is like a rat race! Fast and aggressive drivers jockey for position during rush hour. The painted lines on the road have little effect on the flow of traffic. The Koreans create lanes: if a road can has four lanes but 6 cars can fit, they'll squeeze in seven. It is a wonderful and amazing culture and people with greater potential in the future, but it's rush rush rush during the high traffic periods... they need to chill, listen to some music and stop tearing each other's sideview mirrors off their vehicles--yes, they drive that close to each other or side-swipping street signs.
