Derby school offers GCSE - in cycling

PE course designed for off-road fans

A school in Derby will be offering a special addition to its GSCE in Physical Education from next term – cycling.

From September, Sinfin Community School will include cycling in its PE courses, giving pupils the chance to gain a qualification in two-wheeled skills.

The school – a specialist engineering college – already has its own cyclo-cross track and will include mountain biking, cyclo-cross and BMXing as part of the exam, 60 per cent of which is based on practical work.

Sinfin already offers cycling on its curriculum, which is being rolled out to all Derby secondary schools from next term.

A spokesman for the school said: “Not all kids want to take part in team sports like football or rugby, so cycling provides an opportunity to take part in GCSE PE for those who might not have wanted to do it before.”

Looks like my BMXing eight and six year old sons could get their first GCSE now then if we moved to Derby.
