Police in south west London have launched an appeal for witnesses on Facebook after a cyclist had her arm broken when a female pedestrian pushed her off her bike.

Want to keep your bones healthy? Go running, not cycling, says study

A new study claims that people should go running rather than cycling if they want to keep their bones healthy.

Researchers at the University of Mississippi found that 28 per cent of men aged 35-50 participating in the study had early signs of osteoporosis, compared to 26 per cent of women, reports Telegraph.co.uk.

Subjects were scanned to calculate their bone mineral density (BMD), which is thought to peak at age 30.

Lead researcher Dr Martha Bass said:“We typically associate loss of bone mineral density with post-menopausal women, but our findings showed elevated risk in younger men.

“Almost all participants who were found to have osteopenia were surprised and I think this is a more prevalent issue than anyone expected."

She added that weight-bearing exercise such as running was best for maintaining BMD, saying:  “calcium plays a larger role when bones are still developing. After that, the body begins to rely on weight-bearing exercises to keep bones strong. It really does boil down to use it or lose it.”

Austrian MTB rider Christina Kollmann-Forstner suspended for links to blood doping ring

The UCI has provisionally suspended Austrian mountain biker Christina Kollmann-Forstner after the former European champion and world championship silver medallist became the latest rider to be linked to the Operation Aderlass blood doping ring.

In a statement, world cycling’s governing body said:

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announces that it has notified the Austrian rider Christina Kollmann-Forstner of potential Anti-Doping Rule Violations (Use of Prohibited Method and Possession of Prohibited Method) based on information received from the law enforcement authorities of Austria in the context of the Operation Aderlass.

After review of all elements in its possession, the UCI has decided to provisionally suspend the rider with immediate effect pursuant to Article 7.9.3 of the UCI Anti-Doping Rules.

Again, the UCI and the Cycling Anti-Doping Foundation (CADF), the independent body mandated to define and lead the strategy on anti-doping testing and investigations in our sport, will continue to cooperate and assist all parties involved in the Aderlass investigation.

At this stage, the UCI will not comment any further on this matter.

Cyclists in US national park stranded after avalanche

13 cyclists in the Glacier National Park in Montana were stranded on Monday's Memorial Day public holiday following an avalanche.

Park staff had to clear a rockfall that had happened at a site the cyclists had already passed on the Going To The Sun Road then had to wait several hours for the snow to stabilise so they could begin to clear it.

£275,000 reward offered to find gunman who shot cyclist and left him for dead

Police in Australia have offered a $500,000 (£275,000) reward for information identifying the person who shot a cyclist multiple times on Victoria’s Myrtleford-Everton Rail Trail in February 18, 2017.

Kelvin Tennant, aged 72, was shot in the chest and head and left for dead by his assailant. He was discovered by two passing cyclists and airlifted to hospital, and took months to recover from his wounds, reports ABC News.

Speaking of how the shooter departed the scene without making sure he was dead, Mr Tennant said: "I find that a bit strange. He obviously had no regard for my life. He wanted to kill me," he said.

"I've thought since that time why didn't he walk over and … put the gun to my head and finish the job.

"Whether he got spooked and left the scene very quickly or thought he'd finished me off I don't know, but I'm here today to talk about it."

"Kelvin was simply out enjoying riding his motorised bike along the rail trail when someone has tried to kill him," said Detective Inspector Dean Thomas of Victoria Police.

"At this stage we're unable to find any sort of motive. We've looked very, very hard at this, and worked tirelessly on it but unfortunately we cannot find a motive.

“We hope this reward can bring forward new information so we can find the person responsible and bring them before the courts."

Lifting weights strengthens the bones and increases bone density. That’s what it does simple.

i used to be a body builder when younger and the last 2 years have gone back to hitting the weights   most days . Even when I’m out on my bike i will usually hit legs in that evening . I brake my body parts down so workouts are short and intense . I ride my bike the same way do short rides 1- 2 hours and lots of uphill hit reps . I’m  bigger than most cyclists , I have upper body muscles and this has not impacted my riding in anyway . I climb just as good . I’ve always been about the power so putting on muscles has not impacted my bike performance in any way .  In fact my last few foreign  outings I have climbed as good as ever . I don’t ride though for 4 hours I just like to hit one or to mountains the most depending on the mountain . If your all about endurance and staying skinny then keep the weights low and go for more reps so the weights become almost a cardio exercise And you will be doing your overall health wonders . Just riding a bike is no good .

I used to do weights one day and MTB the next. I never really got any gains but I sure looked better than I do now. Got to be happy with stick arms if you want to be REALLY serious about cycling.

I do like the swings and roundabout elements of cycling though. My mate is about 15kg more than me for the same height and will out-power me on the straights but I can get him on the hills.

Out of interest, can you microdose testosterone or do you have to take at least TRT levels to see any difference?

I like running, skipping, weights, calisthenics, eating yogurt and being able to walk upright without shuffling, among many other things. Get over it.

Not being a gym bunny myself,how does lifting weights in anyway increase or maintain bone density ,which is the problem the report claims is the issue with cycling doesnt

your muscles are attached to your bones. The more you use your muscles the more your bones need to be strong to provide resistance, so they respond to the muscular force. Archaeologists and forensic scientists can deduce how strong a person was by measuring the density of their bones.

Motorised bike? Could have been Strava rage? A section near my house by the main road has a KOM with 60mph average, I'd like to shoot who did that.
