Round-the-world cyclist (previously fined for cycling in Bedford) has bike stolen in London (+ video)

Suicide survivor and mental health campaigner Josh Quigley set off from Edinburgh last week

A round-the-world cyclist from Scotland has had his bike stolen before even crossing the English Channel, with the crime taking place between Sunday night and Monday morning in Southwark, London.

Josh Quigley – who, you may remember, was fined £75  by in February for riding his bike in Bedford town centre – abandoned a previous attempt to ride around the world in 2016, having completed 10,000 miles.

The 24-year-old, a suicide survivor who now campaigns on mental health issues and hopes to inspire others through his travels, set off last week from Edinburgh on his sixth attempt to circumnavigate the globe by bicycle.

But yesterday morning he discovered that his bike had been stolen from outside St Christopher’s Inn, the hostel on London’s Borough High Street where he had spent the night.

In a video posted to Twitter, he explained that normally he would take his bike inside with him on overnight stops, but staff at the hostel told him he had to leave it outside.

He also tweeted about the theft to the London-based Twitter account @stolenride, which tries to reunite owners with their bikes.

In a separate post, Quigley, who aims to visit 60 countries and ride 50,000 miles over the next five years, wrote: “Goodbye my friend.

“When I first met you I wasn’t doing too good.

“We went on a journey.

“You saved my life and helped me believe in myself I won’t get to finish with you, but I will finish.

“To whoever has you now, I hope you give to them what you gave to me.

“Life.”

Who leaves his (or her) bike outside a hostel?

On the occasions when I've had to tour solo, I either 'stealth camp' (but still chain the bike to a nearby tree or fence), or I find somewhere that'll let me take my bike into my room.

Not justifying the actions of the POS who nicked the bike, however.

I've toured and often you dont know until you get there. Unfortuantely London is full of hard core bike theives.

Just feels like people are kicking a good man down

I think what FrankH may have been trying to address, was that there's an awful lot of "this-survivor" and "that-survivor" going around nowadays.  Nobody just moves on.

(Full disclosure: I attempted suicide when I was a teenager.  Was very pi$$ed off when I realised it hadn't worked, but admitted defeat and haven't tried again).

Are you sure? i think he was questioning the term itself.

There is a point about the rise of victimhood, but tbh, you have to let this go. Some people have been hurt and some percieve hurt, it often amounts to the same thing.

Glad you survived though 1

Frank, I've never called you a rascist, but you seem to be showing your caring and sympathetic side on this thread.

He attempted suicide and was saved before he died. Pretty simple really.

Edit: However I hope he wasn't relying on the lock shown in each of those pics of the bike as that definitely wouldn't have put off a reasonably prepared tosser with some wire cutters.

Frank, attempted suicide is often were someone has tried to take their lives and fortunately the emergency services manage to get to them before they die. This is a suicide survivor. My brother attempted suicide and succeeded, I really wished he had survived.

What Josh is trying to address is the self harm men put themsleves through, often its alcohol, violence or general abusive behaviour, on rare occassions its suicide.

Best avoid these sort of subjects if you only have derision to offer, its no joke.
