Geraint Thomas to feature in hour-long BBC documentary

Tour de France champion's preparations for title defence to feature in Geraint Thomas: Easy Rider...

Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas is to feature in a behind-the-scenes documentary from BBC Cymru Wales and BBC Two.

The programme, to be called Geraint Thomas: Easy Rider, will follow the Team Sky star in the opening months of the season, including training in France and Tenerife, as he prepares to defend the yellow jersey in July.

The documentary, part of which will be self-shot by Thomas, is being made by Cardiff-based Nimble Productions.

Their previous work includes Sam Warburton: Full Contact about the former Wales and British & Irish Lions rugby union captain who, like Thomas, attended Whitchurch High School

The new programme will include interviews with Thomas and his family to chart his rise from riding as a youngster at Cardiff’s Maindy Velodrome to becoming one of the biggest stars of the sport.

He said: “Last year was an absolutely phenomenal year for me. The support I received from the fans was just incredible.

“As this season gets under way I’m looking forward to sharing more of my story, and taking the audience with me as I prepare for the races ahead.”

Nick Andrew, head of commissioning at BBC Cymru Wales, said: “Geraint Thomas: Easy Rider will be a stunning portrait of an athlete at the top of his game.

“People know Geraint the humble, warm and witty man, but put him on a bike and he’s the ultimate warrior and a national treasure.

“This film will give our audiences extraordinary and privileged access to his preparation and dedication as he sets out to defend his Tour de France title.

“I can’t wait to see what the creative team at Nimble Productions do with this film.

“If it’s anything like their last epic Sam Warburton: Full Contact we’re in for a treat, and we can expect an amazing insight into one of the greatest sportsmen on the planet.”

BBC Two Controller Patrick Holland commented: “We were gripped by last year’s Tour de France and Geraint Thomas’ triumph.

“This film offers amazing insight into the passion and sacrifice behind the yellow jersey from a new national hero.”

Interested to see what the Froome/Thomas dynamic will be like at the tour this year, another Wiggins/Froome-esque could ensue...
