Video: Old man pulls gun on cyclist in bizarre suburban stand-off in South Carolina

What triggered confrontation between man in velomobile and gun-toting pedestrian?

This is one of the weirder videos we’ve been sent. The video starts with some sort of tetchy misunderstanding between a guy riding in a velomobile and an old bloke who is initially off camera.

“You asked me to get out,” says the velomobile bloke who captured the footage, Dana Thompson.

“No, I didn’t ask you to get out of the car,” says the man. “I said don’t get out of the car.”

Thompson replies: “I do what I want,” and duly gets out of the velomobile.

Wheeling the vehicle towards the man, he asks: “Now what is it you want to tell me?”

The other fella thinks that an entirely proportional and appropriate response to this question is to whip a gun out from behind his back and point it at Thompson.

“Shut the fuck up or I’ll blow your fucking head off,” he says with all the passion and urgency of a man requesting six slices of honey roast ham at the deli counter in his local supermarket.

“Get back in that fucking thing,” he adds.

“Oh, are you going to pull a gun?” asks Thompson. “You’re on film, buddy.”

“Get outta here,” says the man.

Only once Thompson has indeed got back in that fucking thing and made moves to get outta there does the man finally lower the gun. At that point he presumably just goes back to ambling around suburban neighbourhoods, soaking up the sun with a gun behind his back.

The incident’s from 2017 and we’ve no idea whether the guy was arrested.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

Better to have a few missing teeth than too many (or the correct amount, but overgrown)

Brits don't have bad teeth because it's not 1963 any more. However, America is saturated with guns like no other developed country, and somehow we even have to hear about it here. But Hiro if you would like to stick around and read about mostly British cycling matters, then I am sure you will be a valuable member of the community.

I'm sure you all have extensive experience in the US, your well informed, thoughtful, surprising and considered theories make that clear. Yes, suburban South Carolina is nothing but MAGA cap-wearing white rednecks constantly engaging in gun battles. Would you like to hear some of my thoughts about Norway or the UK as an American who has never been to either? Perhaps I could cram in a few stereotypes about reindeer and bad teeth respectively... would that add to the conversation? Perhaps reindeer with bad teeth? Yes, as an American I'm "terrified of my fellow citizens" as I cower behind walls that keep the "bad bad people out", simultaneously clutching my gun to my chest, eating a Big Mac, waving a flag and stomping on baby seals. Do you guys know the Queen? What kind of sleigh do you use day-to-day?

Erm - so you thought that any part of that old man's actions was acceptable?  Really??

(btw - Do you just google around non-'Merican websites so you can register with them and post righteous indignation?)

Can you really blame us for forming judgements when there's this kind of reaction from that bloke? I'd dare say that Trump does not portray a sane, balanced view of the U.S. either, but that's what we see.

“If you look at the statistics, they show British teeth are healthier than American [teeth],” says Ben Atkins, a trustee of the Oral Health Foundation. “A recent joint study [between University of London and Harvard] showed the average American person was missing 7.31 teeth compared to 6.97 in Britain, which is significantly higher.” Further studies also showed that Britain topped OECD countries for good teeth, with only 0.7 missing or filled teeth in its 12-year-olds (the testing age generally used by the industry) compared to 1.3 in the U.S.

An armed society is a polite society...apparently.

Must be awful living in a country where you are so terrified of your fellow citizens that you feel the need to take deadly weaponry out with you for a simple stroll around your neighbourhood.

Either it's a setup (advert) to promote having a camera so they can find out who murdered you in friendly suburban 'Merica, or we REALLY need to see the few minutes running up to this.  Looking at the street layout, it could be one of those fancy gated estates the Americans love, with their private police  .  I mean security team onsite making sure no "bad bad people" come in (although I believe Trump is planning on stopped them at the border). Having stayed with a couple in one of these estates when in Calif for a friends wedding, it was wierd . . in and out every day for 4 days, final day we take a walk, walk out the main gate, wave and are greeted by the same guys as all week (who by this time were referring to us as Mr and mrs Viking) wander back in 20 minutes later assume just waving at them again would suffice, nope, come over to the booth and register in again properly...
