Near Miss of the Day 210: Very close pass by car and trailer

Our regular feature highlighting close passes caught on camera from around the country – today it’s South Yorkshire

The latest video in our Near Miss of the Day series shows the moment a motorist whose car was towing a trailer cut in on two cyclists in South Yorkshire in what they believe was a deliberate act.

It was filmed in September in Moss near Doncaster by road.cc reader Steve, who told us: “There were two of us, yes side by side but on a quiet road. Just as we were getting into the village the cyclist (Chris) on my outside had to swerve and cut in front of me to avoid being hit by the passing car and trailer.

“There was absolutely nothing on the other side of the road as he approached us  and nothing after he passed. So the cut in was totally deliberate in our eyes.

“Unfortunately Chris’s leg obscures the cars reg and as you can see there is no reg on the trailer. So I could not report this to the police for further action.

“I was really concerned as it was my first ride after dislocating my shoulder, so the last thing I needed was to be run off the road and crash. Luckily we had enough skill and awareness to avoid that outcome,” he added.

> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 - Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.

If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).

Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

> What to do if you capture a near miss or close pass (or worse) on camera while cycling

Simon joined road.cc as news editor in 2009 and is now the site’s community editor, acting as a link between the team producing the content and our readers. A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.

Not necessarily malicious. Could just be a dumbass who doesn’t realise that his vehicle is ten foot longer than usual. Still not good, though.

Even without the trailer it was malicious as they pulled in very quickly with NO oncoming traffic.

My goodness, fine skills for the rider in not being hit there.

Looks like a mower and strimmer in the back of the trailer. Probably a local gardener. Perhaps a google or flick through the yellow pages might turn something up...

Alternatively, if you're near a local tip, try their cctv...

Yup, punishment cut-in.

Just as well your friend reacted as that trailer is wide.

People with no regard for other's safety, driving with intent to injure should have their licence withdrawn.

I guess the driver is a local tradesman/builder, so should be quite easy to identify, given scrapes on front bumper and missing left rear wheel trim.

Try an Ad. in the local shops or paper asking for help to identify the owner.

Well, I don't know if Steve or Chris swore, but I did watching it.  No plate on the trailer is illegal as far as I know, so it's probably an habitual criminal with no respect for anyone else.  I'd be tempted to report it, as if this is an habitual criminal, the local police may recognise the car or trailer.
