Near Miss of the Day 81: Close pass on hill saves van driver seconds
The latest video in our Near Miss of the Day feature highlights something we see again and again in the footage our readers submit.
And that's the fact that their lives are put in danger by thoughtless motorists all for the sake of the driver saving a couple of seconds, as is the case in this video.
It happened last week in Dudley, West Midlands and was sent in by road.cc reader James Stanton, who lives in Stourbridge.
Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).
Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

In my experience (of which I have had many) the only way to achieve a change in attitudes is to deal direct, where possible. I sent James Stanton's video to the company, along with appropriate links - including the West Midlands Police Close Initative.
This is the first time I have bandwagoned on someone elses's misfortune, generally speaking I deal with companies privately and without wider 'fanfare.' I was curious as to the outcome so gave it a try:

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.
We have held a meeting this morning at 1100hrs on the 25th January 2018 with the sub-contractor who was driving this fleet vehicle at the time of the incident and have decided not to employ him as a sub-contractor while we continue our investigations.
Our company takes Health and Safety very seriously and we are happy to assist the authorities with any enquiries regarding this incident.

This was mine, Road.cc did ask me for more details, alas I hadn't got chance to double check the details. So this was on the Delph Road, Brierley Hill, part of my regular commute into Birmingham City centre. I've neither contacted the police nor the company involved.
Cycling to work yesterday, I was overtaken with plenty of space by a coach, which was a good start...
...but then completely undone as he then cut straight back in front of me to stop at the red light that could easily have been seen before he even started overtaking.
What was worse is that we were on a dual carriageway at the time, so he could have moved completely into the empty right hand lane and stayed there at the lights.
So much for being a professional driver!
Why do you think professional drivers are any better?
I've overheard so much shit coming out of the mouth of bus and coach drivers about cyclists.
Did any of you see him cutting across the mini round about at the end, too? Shit driving, that.
It makes you wonder just how many motorists would pass if the authorities were to indrotuce mandatory re testing...

Can’t tell you the amount of times I been overtaken just before a car breaks to take a turn/junction then had to break for the car to go around the corner. The lack of foresight amongst some drivers is amazing.
