Near Miss of the Day 72: Distracted driver on roundabout

Our regular feature highlighting close passes caught on camera from around the country – today it’s Norway

The latest video in our Near Miss of the Day series is the second we've featured by Norway-based Scot, Stuart Baillie, who lives in Stavanger.

Stuart told us: "The driver appeared to be distracted by something below dashboard level, I assume a mobile.

"One good solid Scottish/Viking roar woke her up though."

He added: "It was daylight, with my normal light/clothing setup for riding where there's traffic."

A case of  Beklager, jeg så deg ikke (assuming Google Translate's rendering into Norwegian of "Sorry mate, I didn't see you" is correct).

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.

If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).

Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

Google's getting better, although the more normal reaction is simply  "HÆÆÆÆÆÆ?"   <Eh?????>

Personally I find it beneficial follow the conventions of the vast majority when it comes to which side to cycle on.  Also I believe that the UK is alone in Europe in driving and cycling on the left. (That said handbrake turns with the left hand still feel better after 10 years of left hand drive driving)

The reason we ride on the left is so that when on horseback, swords are not crossed when people travel the road in opposite directions.

PS it's basically 'island nations' that drive on the left, no?
