Man arrested for causing death of 72-year-old time trialist in Derbyshire

A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the death of John Stewart, a 72-year-old founding member of the South Pennine Road Club, who was hit and killed on the A50 during a club 10 at around 7.50pm on Thursday June 15.

Stewart was hit by a flat-bed Mercedes between the A511 junction and Junction 5 for Hilton and died at the scene.

The Derby Telegraph reports that a man from Swadlincote has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

A police spokeswoman said: "We're appealing for drivers with dashboard camera footage to come forward as part of an investigation into a fatal collision near Scropton.

"Collision investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone who may have any dashcam footage of it or the vehicle prior to the collision, to come forward.

"Witnesses or anyone with information should call Sargeant Scott Riley on 101, quoting reference 17000252819."

In 2012, 47-year-old father-of-two Karl Austin was hit and killed by a lorry while riding in a time trial on the A50.

The driver responsible was banned for two years and given a 24-week jail sentence, suspended for two years, after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving.
