A good pair of cycling socks is essential to ensure a comfortable and chafe-free ride for your feet. Here are some of our picks for 2017...
Chapeau’s Lightweight sock is made from fast wicking polyamide and Coolmax blend to maximise temperature control and breathability. It has a padded sole for extra comfort underfoot, with 5% elastane added for a perfect fit. Like many in this selection it’s a tall sock that comes up above the ankle.
These socks are as worn by the Madison Genesis pro team, and made in Italy. They’re long in appearance with a 7.5 inch cuff length, and Madison say they give a comfortable and supportive fit. The arch is ribbed for extra foot-hugging support.
£24.99 (pack of three)
Pearl Izumi’s most popular unisex sock also comes in white and yellow if you’re not digging the shocking pink, but you can’t deny the high-viz makes for some extra visibility on the roads. The yarns are purported to provide moisture transfer for sweat wicking in the hottest weather, and there’s flat toe seam construction and mesh ventilation over the foot. A tall cuff height means these socks will come up above your ankles with stretchy elastic for a universal fit, and they’re sold in packs of three for £25 on Pearl Izumi’s website.
£12.99 (pack of two)
These socks from Evans’ in-house clothing brand FWE might not exactly be for summer, but the breathable 50% merino wool blend regulates temperature and makes them suitable for riding all year round. The jacquard design and loud colours might prove divisive for those who value subtlety, but if you’re happy to embrace it then the £11.99 price tag for a pack of two is very reasonable.
Handmade in Manchester and the only option here with aero credentials, the prototype of the Active Aero socks were tested by elite track cyclist Alistair Rutherford before they went into full production. They’re considerably more expensive than the other options here, but if you’re looking for top-end gains in your next time trial these might be the way to go.
That’s right, we’ve saved the best till last in this listicle… if you want the ultimate in cycling street cred then look no further than road.cc’s very own Argyle socks! Available in black or white from our online shop and for a fantastically reasonable price of £6.99 a pair, they’re the ideal way to add a dash of style to your ride, whatever the weather. Be warned though, once you’ve got a pair you’ll be wanting another!
After cobbling together a few hundred quid during his student days off the back of a hard winter selling hats (long story), Jack bought his first road bike at the age of 20 and has been hooked ever since. He was Staff Writer at 220 Triathlon magazine for two years before joining road.cc in 2017, and reports on all things tech as well as editing the road.cc live blog. He is also the news editor of our electric-powered sister site eBikeTips. Jack's preferred events are time trials, sportives, triathlons and pogo sticking (the latter being another long story), and on Sunday afternoons he can often be found on an M5 service station indulging in his favourite post-race meal of 20 chicken nuggets, a sausage roll, caramel shortbread and a large strawberry milkshake.
